Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a disease that permanently disables the body’s immune system. It is caused by a virus that attacks the immune system and makes the victim a helpless prey for other diseases like pneumonia, meningitis or cancer, and finally leads to death.
The causative agent of AIDS is the Human Immuno Deficiency Virus (HIV). When HIV enters the body, it seeks out special cells that helps lymphocytes produce antibodies. Once inside, the HIV either reproduces so quickly that it destroys its host cells, or replicates slowly sending out more virus particles to attack other helper cells.
AIDS is believed to be transmitted by the passage of body fluids. HIV can be transmitted from an infected person to a healthy individual in three ways.
1. By sharing needles or syringes in the use of intravenous drugs.
2. From a mother to a child during pregnancy, at the time of birth or immediately after birth.
3. Through sexual intercourse.
