Sn,C , Si and Ge are all group 14 elements .Yet ,Sn is a conductor , C is a insulator while Si and Ge are semi conductors . Why?

The four valence electrons of C are present in second orbit while Si has in third orbit. So energy required to extract electron from Si is smaller than that of C.
So no. Of free electron in Si is more than C.
This makes Si conductivity much higher than C.
