Power Factor of an AC circuit is defined as the ratio of true power to apparent power of the circuit.
Since,P=Ev Iv cos ϕ
Here,P is called true power,Ev Is is called apparent power or virtual power.
Thus,Power Factor =True Power/Apparent Power=P/Ev Iv= cos ϕ=R/Z=Resistance/Impedance=R/√R²+(Xl-Xc)²(from Impedance triangle).
Power Factor is always positive,but less than one or most equal to one.
