Two circular coils Xand Y having radii R and R/2 respectively are placed in horizontal plane with their centres coinciding with each other. Coil X has current I flowing throug it in the clockwise sense. What must be the current in coil Y to make the total magnetic field at the common centre of the two coils zero? With the same current flowing in the two coils, if the coil Y is now lifted vertically through a distance R,what would be the net magnetic at centre of coil Y?

The magnetic field B at the center of the coil of radius a is along the axis of the coil and has a magnitude :
μ i / (2 a)
So the current in coil Y should be equal to (i/2) in the opposite direction, so that the net magnetic field at the center is 0.
