The Caribbean – Martinique, Guadeloupe and San Domingo, the colonies were important suppliers of commodities like tobacco, indigo, sugar and coffee. The slave trade started in the seventeenth century.

The Europeans were not ready to go to the distant lands for trade, so this resulted in the shortage of labours in plantations and became the reason of the beginning of the triangular slave trade between Europe, Africa and America.

The French merchants from the port of Nantes to the African coast brought slaves from the local chieftains.Through ships, where they were tightly packed, were brought to the Caribbean and sold to the plantation owners.

Due to the slave trade, the ports like Bordeaux and Nantes witnessed economic prosperity.

The triangular slave trade continued because it coped up with the growing demand of the sugar, coffee, and indigo in the European market.
