Mass of the shell, M = 40 kg
Speed of the shell, u = 72 km/h = 20 m/s
Initial momentum of the shell, Pi = Mu = (40)(20) = 800 kg-m/s
After it breaks, the masses of the parts are 15 kg and 25 kg. The 15 kg piece stops. Let the speed of the other piece be ‘v’.
So, total momentum after breaking apart, Pf = (15)(0) + (25)(v) = 25v
Now, by law of conservation of momentum,
Pf = Pi
=> 25v = 800
=> v = {tex}800\over 25{/tex} = 32 m/s
This is the speed of the other piece.
