Germanium has less ionisation enthalpy....due to larger size....so electrons can easily move....

At room temperature , silicon crystal have fewer electron than Germanium crystal , however Silicon crystals are not easily damaged by excess heat . silicon is less expensive due to the greater abundance of element so silicon is preferred over germanium
