Reduction of a nitro alkane with iron scrap (Fe) + HCl is preferred because ,
(i) Fe Cl2 is produced which gets easily hydrolysed to form FeCl3 and release HCl during the reaction.
Fe + 2HCl ------------> FeCl2 + 2H
(ii) the process , therefore , becomes economical as only a small amount of HCl is required to initiate the reaction.
Usually(, Fe + HCl ) is preferred as a reducing agent , particularly in manufacture of amines.
