Cp refers to contt pressure and Cv refers to constt volume. When pressure is constt then the heat given to the system is used in two ways:i) in raising the temperature ii)in expansion or in raising the volume. While in constt volume the total heat given to the system is used only in rising the the temperature. Hence Cp>Cv.
