A number line shows you a "picture view" of what a number is. You can visually see where your numbers are, and what other numbers are nearby.
Larger numbers are always towards the right, and smaller numbers are always towards the left.
The little marks along the line represent the next highest or next lowest number. Most of the time the little marks will be 1 count space apart, like 2 then 3 then 4. But sometimes the marks can be more than 1 count space apart. It doesn't really matter, as long as the marks are the same count space apart.
