Federalism is a form of government in which powers and authority are distributed between a strong centralized government and individual sovereign states that exist under that government's authority. For example, here in the US, each state has the authority to regulate its own citizens, but they are also bound to follow the laws of the US government (under limitations as enumerated in the Constitution).
