Photrophism occur due a pytoharmone called auxin, it promotes growth, auxin is more in darker places and less in brighter places so when light of sun comes from top it is equally spread and due to this stems become straight but when light comes from a side then it get collected on opposite side which cause turning of stem in direction of light, always remember auxin has opposite effect on roots so when stems grow towards right their roots grow to left?
