A wave that travels from one point of the medium to another is called a progressive wave. A progressive wave may be transverse or longitudinal. A stationary wave is formed when two identical waves travelling on the opposite directions along a straight line interfere. The superposition of two waves will give rise to a stationary wave. Formation of stationary wave is possible only in bounded medium.
