A galvanometer can be converted into a votmeter to measure upto

(i) 'V' volts by connecting a resistance R1 in series with coil.

(ii) V/2 volts by connecting a resistance R2 in series with its coil.

Find the resistance (R), in terms of Rand R2 required to convert it into a voltmeter thst can read upto '2V' volts.

Ans. A potential drop across galvanometer with a resistance in series is given by.

1) V = IgR1 + IgG      ........... (1)

2) V2 = IgR2 + IgG    .............. (2)

Also from Question

2V  = IgR +IgG           ............ (3)

Subtract (1) from (3), we Get

V = IgR - R1           ............ (4)

Subtract (2) from (1), We Get

V2 = Ig (R1 - R2)      ............... (5)

Divide (4) by (5), We get

21 =R - R1R1 -R2

=> R - R = 2R1 - 2R2

=> R = 3R1 - 2R
