The probability of guessing the correct answer to a certain question is x/2 (x upon 2). If the probability of not guessing the correct answer to the question is 2/3 ( 2 upon 3) , then find x.

Ans. Let A denote the probability of guessing correct answer and B denote the probability of not guessing correct answer.

Then, $p (A) = \frac{x}{2} a n d p (B) = \frac{2}{3}$

$p (A) + p (B) = 1$

=> $\frac{x}{2} + \frac{2}{3} = 1$

=> $\frac{x}{2} = 1 - \frac{2}{3}$

=> $\frac{x}{2} = \frac{1}{3}$

=> $x = \frac{2}{3}$
