The 4th-electrons have poor shielding effect,so effective nuclear charge experienced by the outer electrons increases.This result in a steady decrease in size of lanthanides. This is known as lanthanoid contraction

Contraction means the decrease in size. So, lanthanide contraction means the decrease in size of the elements down the group(lanthanide).
