it is commonly known as cryolite. Aluminum is obtained from pure alumina by hall heroult process by electrolysis In this process pure alumina(Al2O3) is mixed with cryoliteto reduce the melting point of mixture and increase its conductivity It makes alumina a good conductor which is normally a poor conductor.
