Phosphorus pentoxide is a chemical compound with the molecular formula - P4O10. Its common name is derived from its empirical formula - P2O5.
P4O10 is prepared by burning elemental phosphorus in sufficient supply of air:
P4 + 5O2→ P4O10
Phosphorus pentoxide is not flammable but it reacts vigorously with water and water-containing substances like wood or cotton, liberates much heat and may even cause fire.
