The nation building process in Germany had demonstrated the dominance of the Prussian state power. Otto Von Bismarck carried out the process of unification with the help of the Prussian army and bureaucracy. Three wars with Austria, Denmark and France ended in Prussian victory and completed the process of unification. In January 1871, the Prussian king, William I, was proclaimed German Emperor in a ceremony held at Versailles and the completed the domination of Prussia. The Prussian state placed a strong emphasis on modernising the currency, banking, legal and judicial systems in Germany. In 1834, a customs union was formed at the initiative of Prussia and joined by most of the German states. The creation of a network of railways further stimulated mobility, harnessing economic interests to national unification. A strong army of the monarchy, the military and large landowners suppressed other movements
