Limitations of Rutherford Model:-

  1. Rutherford proposed that the electrons revolve around the nucleus in fixed paths called orbits. According to Maxwell, accelerated charged particles emit electromagnetic radiations and hence an electron revolving around the nucleus should emit electromagnetic radiation. This radiation would carry energy from the motion of the electron which would come at the cost of shrinking of orbits. Ultimately the electrons would collapse in the nucleus. Calculations have shown that as per Rutherford’s model an electron would collapse in the nucleus in less than 10-8 seconds. So Rutherford’s model was not in accordance with Maxwell’s theory and could not explain the stability of an atom.
  2. One of the drawbacks of Rutherford’s model was also that he did not say anything about the arrangement of electrons in an atom which made his theory incomplete.
  3. Although the early atomic models were inaccurate and failed to explain certain experimental results, they were the base for future developments in the world of quantum mechanics.

Right hand thumb rule was given by Maxwell. So It is also known as Maxwell’s right hand thumb rule. According to this rule, if you are holding a current carrying wire in your right hand so that the thumb points in the direction of the current, then the direction in which the fingers wrap the wire will represent the direction of magnetic lines of force.

Because at the time of charging or discharging a capacitor , an electric field is set up between the plates of the capscitor leads to electric flux and the changing electric flux leads to displacement current hence the galvanometer shows momentary deflection

The electric dipole moment is a measure of the separation of positive and negative electrical charges within a system, that is, a measure of the system's overall polarity. The electric-field strength of the dipole is proportional to the magnitude of dipole moment.......... The SI units for electric dipole moment are coulomb-meter (C·m);..... The most common unit is the debye (D). ??? Theoretically, an electric dipole is defined by the first-order term of the multipole expansion; it consists of two equal and opposite charges that are infinitely close together. This is unrealistic, as real dipoles have separated charge. .....because the charge separation is very small compared to everyday lengths, the error introduced by treating real dipoles like they are theoretically perfect is usually negligible. The dipole's direction usually points from the negative charge towards the positive charge.
