If the EM wave is plane polarized, the E vector would be in the y-direction (hence our use of the symbol Ey) and it's plane of oscillation would be the x-y plane If the EM wave is unpolarized, the E vector would not remain in one plane, but change it's direction constantly every nanosecond, always remaining perpendicular to the x-direction
