The concept of neo-determinism was put forward by Griffith Taylor in the 1920s. According to Taylor Man is able to accelerate, slow or stop the progress of a country’s development. He is like the traffic controller in a large city, who alters the rate, not the direction of progress; and perhaps the phrase ‘Stop-and-Go Determinism’.. The concept shows that neither is there a situation of absolute necessity (environmental determinism) nor is there a condition of absolute freedom (possibilism). It means that human beings can conquer nature by obeying it.
Man follows nature’s programme only if he is wise, presuming he can act foolishly, which admits the possibilities contention that within broad limits set by environment man can choose, at the very least.

A geographer, Griffith Taylor introduced another concept which reflects a middle path between the two ideas of environmental determinism and possibilism. He termed it as Neodeterminism or stop and go determinism. He admitted the impact of nature in human but also recognised the human skill, mental ability, scientific development and technical know-how through which man can use nature to certain extent according to his needs. The concept shows that neither is there a situation of absolute necessity (environmental determinism) nor is there a condition of absolute freedom(possibilism). It means that human beings can conquer nature by obeying it.

Subsistence agriculture is one in which the farming areas consume all, or nearly so, of the products locally grown.
Features of intensive subsistence agriculture:
(i) Intensive subsistence agriculture dominated by wet paddy cultivation: This type of agriculture is characterised by dominance of the rice crop.
(ii) Land holdings are very small due to the high density of population. Farmers work with the help of family labour leading to intensive use of land.
(iii) Intensive subsidence agriculture dominated by crops other than paddy: Due to the difference in relief, climate, soil and some of the other geographical factors.
(iv) it is not practical to grow paddy in many parts of monsoon Asia.
