Dr. Sadao's father wanted him to become a doctor and knew that the future existed overseas. Therefore, during their walks he told Sadao that the islands yonder were the stepping stones to the future. Sadao knew well that his education was his father's chief concern for which he had taken great pains. Consequently, Sadao was sent to America at the age of twenty two to gain all the knowledge that he could gain. Though it was a fact that Dr Sadao's father hated Americans, the sole motive behind his decision could be the lure of technologically advanced medical studies available in America. He may have wanted his son to get trained in the best environment and according to the latest medical development.

When Hana noticed the deep red scars on the American soldier's neck, she worriedly hoped that he had not been tortured by the Japanese. She knew it was a common practice for the Japanese to torture their prisoners of war in the most brutal manner. This also reminded her of General Takima, who used to beat his wife. The thought of General Takima, who was cruel to his wife, torturing the prisoner made her shudder with fear.

Spring is the season of optimism and hope. It symbolizes life. But, unfortunately, millions of children in our country waste their childhood in rag picking and working in other hazardous industries. The joys of childhood, the vibrancy of spring is lost either in the garbage or in dingy cells with furnaces. The grinding poverty and traditions condemn these children to a life of exploitation. Children like Saheb and Mukesh have no spring in their life because of the poverty they have been born into . They see very little hope of escaping from their impoverished life of misery & deprivation. Moreover, years of mind-numbing toil have killed all initiative and the ability to dream. They are entangled in a spiral that moves from poverty to apathy to greed and to injustice. Since they don't enjoy the privileges of childhood that the children of affluent families enjoy, the poet considers these children whose spring (childhood) has been lost. Hence, the title 'Lost Spring' is justified.

Franz did not want to go to school that day as he had not prepared his lesson on participles. It seemed more exciting to him to stay outdoors as it was such a bright and warm day. The idea of staying outside the school fascinated him more as he had not done his home assignment.

The young seagull had a great fear of flying. His parents chided him for it. They tried their best to encourage him to fly, but it went all in vain. His mother played many tricks on him. Sometimes, she flew away from the ledge and left him alone. He came out and tried to flap his wings, but his fear seized him and again he went inside. She threatened him that he would die of hunger as she did not feed him for a few days. Even then he could not gather the courage for flying. But this trick worked and he tried to make his first attempt. Soon he started flying. Thus his mother helped him to learn flying. It was clear that without the help of his mother, the young seagull could not have taken his first flight.
