The poet makes an appeal to his readers, especially the educated and well-off people, to help the poor children of the slum come out and be freed from their miserable surroundings. His appeal is that these children should be given quality education, because education holds the key to their emancipation.

The pictures and maps on the wall are contrasted against the stiflingly dreadful environment in which the children live to bring out the futility of their education in a slum. The worlds that the children get a glimpse of can only remain a fantastical impossibility for them because they do not have access to the most basic amenities in life such as food, hygiene and clothing. Thus, the maps and the pictures might just as well be fantastical realms for these children they read about.

Gaurav Seth 4 years, 8 months ago

The map of the world on the classroom walls is drawn in accordance with the will of the powerlords. This world is not even remotely related to the world of the dirty slums. The world depicted in the pictures that decorate the walls holds a stark contrast with the world of the underfed poverty stricken slum children who live in cramped dark holes. The pictures suggest beauty, well-being and prosperity. So there is no connection whatsoever between the map of the civilized world to that of the world of the children.

"An Elementary School Classroom  in A Slum" paints a dismal picture of poverty by portraying the life of poor slum children who spend their entire life in poverty and have no opportunity to enjoy the real blessings of life.

  • The poet Stephen Spender displays his concern towards the miserable condition of life of slum children due to utter poverty.
  • He describes the sad and pathetic look of the children through moving word-pictures like 'gusty waves', 'hair torn', 'paper-seeming boy', etc.
  • The lack of proper food and nutrition has made them look 'pale' and 'stunted' like 'rootless weeds.'
  • The classrooms in which they study smell like 'sour cream' and the pictures in their classroom of 'Shakespeare' and 'world map' seem completely meaningless.
  • The look of the world from their classroom window shows their uncertain and miserable future.
  • Their entire lives have been spent in cramped holes and their lives are foggy and like endless nights.
  • Overall, the author intends to show how poverty snatches all the joys of our life and make life utterly unbearable.

Gaurav Seth 4 years, 8 months ago

The poet describes the dismal and impoverished world of the slum through the images of the pale and undernourished children. The little homes of these children have been equated with cramped holes. The dilapidated school building and its tarnished walls have limited the vision of the world to the children.

The poet Stephen Spender wants that the children of the slums should be able to experience the beauty and joy of the outside world. He wants that these children should be removed from their dirty surroundings. They should get the opportunity of being educated and be a part of the outside world. Their lives should not be confined to the cemeteries of the slums. They should come out in the green fields and breathe in open air so that they can grow unrestricted and liberated.

Gaurav Seth 4 years, 8 months ago

• Stephen Spender wants the people in power to rescue slum dwellers from poverty and oppression .

• He wants that children should be given opportunities to explore the world with its gifts and bounties.

• He wants the children to acquire proper education and create their own history.

The map on the wall shows beautiful rivers, mountains and valleys whereas the world of the slum children only consists of dim lanes covered with a lead sky. The beautiful world of the map is unknown to them. So the map just tempts them without giving them an opportunity to live in the real world.

Stephen Spender talks about social injustice and class inequalities in the poem. The children in the elementary school in the slum are far away from the grandeur of the progressive outside world. Their future is painted with fog i.e. they have no hope of improvement. They are shut off from the world of the elite and the priveledged. They  are far away from the  beauty of literature and continue their lives in cramped holes...i.e their life is buried under catcombs(underground cemeteries). Only the people in authority can change their miserable lives and help them to rewrite their history.

Gaurav Seth 4 years, 8 months ago

In this poem Stephen Spender describes the theme of social injustice and class inequalities of civilized and poor slum people. The civilized world is educated, progressive and developed. The other world belongs to the slum children of Tyrol valley who need education and they live in cramped holes. He wants then to fulfil this gap and requests the civilized people to educate and raise them.

Derry, Mr. Lamb always maintains a positive attitude towards life and is a downright extrovert.

Mr. Lamb inspires Derry by telling him not to focus on the shortcomings of life and his handicap and instead he should try to enjoy the blessings of life. He tells him to be thankful to God for two arms, two legs, two eyes and ears, a tongue and a brain and advises him to be friendly with everyone around him. Mr. Lamb’s inexplicable words of wisdom inspire Derry and towards the end of the story we see him rushing back to Mr. Lamb’s garden to adopt the attitude and path that have been shown by him. Derry’s long conversation with Mr. Lamb helps him overcome his inferiority complex and poor self-esteem.

On the Face of It describes the human predicament and different sreactions to it  by different people. It's an obvious truth that reader comes to know i.e. both Mr. Lamb and Derry are two different sides of the same coin. Both suffer from handicap, but the way take look at it is entirely different. Though Mr. Lamb has lost one of his leg, he accepts his impairment and reconciles with it. He find beauty in nature leads a useful life. Even before dying he is able to bring about a change in Derry.

On the other hand, Derry succumbs to his handicap and lives an isolated detestable life.  With his scarred face he feels neglected and lonely in this hostile world, but when he meets Mr. Lamb, his attitude towards life takes a shift.

How did Franz’s feelings about Mr. Hamel and school changed?

<hr />

Being late for school, Franz was much scared of scolding by his teacher M. Hamel. When he was entering school, he noticed that there was no commotion rather M. Hamel asked the boy politely to go to his place quickly. He was surprised to see his teacher beautifully dressed. But he was all the more astonished on seeing several other dignified people of the village. In a very gentle, generous, grace and sweet voice M. Hamel said : “My children ! This is the last lesson in French, I shall give you. I want you to be attentive” These words had a soothing effect on the boy. The idea of never seeing him again forgot all about his ruler and other facts.

Then Franz was called to recite participles but he got confused. M. Hamel told that he won’t scold him. The students of Alsace had the trouble of putting off learning. So they should reproach themselves about not knowing their language. He even blamed himself as well as the parents for not learning participles. Then M. Hamel taught grammar with rapt attention and all followed him very decently. In between Franz noticed piercing pain on Hamel’s face as if he wanted to fit everything in his mind before leaving. All these facts changed Franz’s feelings about M. Hamel and school.

Dr sadao ensured that the American sailor had left his house but remained safe and secure as he had planned the escape all in advance. With food and additional clothes, he placed his ship on the coast. He asked the American prisoner of war to row and wait for a Korean vessel to move to a small island near the coast.

Dr. Sadao helped the American sailor by offering him a ship, rations, clothes, and even a torch light to show if his supplies were out. He made sure he was powerful enough for the soldier to take his opportunity and save his lives.

The peddler, also known as The Rattrap Seller, used to sell rattraps made out of wire, but that was not profitable. Sometimes, he had to resort to thievery for survival. He wore shabby clothes, his face was sunken, and hunger gleamed in his eyes. The poor man led a dull and monotonous life so far. One day, he fell into a line of thought which made him realize the world was a rattrap that offered baits to the people. But one day, he himself fell into the rattrap when he stole 30 kronor from the crofter who had offered him shelter. He was trying to get away from the place and got lost in the big forest which later led him to meet the ironmaster, who mistook him for his old acquaintance, but the peddler did not dare to tell him the truth and went along with it. But there was still some goodness left in him which was awakened after he met the daughter of the ironmaster, "Ms. Edla Willmanson," who showed him affection, care, and understood the situation of the rattrap seller. In the end, he returned the money to the crofter with the help of Edla and tried to lead an honest life again.

Yogita Ingle 4 years, 9 months ago

The rattrap seller was a poor vagabond, wearing shabby ragged clothes. He sold rattraps to earn a very meager livelihood. At times he resorted to petty thievery. He considered the entire world as a big rattrap and all the men and women as rats vulnerable to be trapped to various types of baits. He himself got trapped in this rattrap when he stole thirty kronor of the old crofter.

He was always in search of securing some money, by hook or crook. As a result he got into trouble the second time when the Ironmaster mistook him for an old companion and he did not correct him. However, there was some goodness left in him that was brought to surface by kind Edla, the Ironmaster’s elder daughter. At the end he transformed himself and returned the stolen money to the crofter through Edla.

Gaurav Seth 4 years, 9 months ago

The rattrap peddler was a tall man who had his own, imagination and meditation. Instead of flowing some goodness in him, he had the human weakness of petty thievery and begging to keep his body and soul together. He wore rags and hunger gleamed in his eyes. He went round selling self-made small rattrape of wire. Devoid of any sheltering place, he could spend his night wherever he desired. Mostly he came across sour faces and was a victim of his cruel circumstances. He could of knock at the door any person for his night shelter.

He philosophises his existence and inside the world as a big rattap. According to him all the riches, joys, food, clothing and shelter are just baits. Anyone who touches the bait, the rattrap closes on him. Then everything comes to an end. He stole away the thirty knonor of the crofter though the later offered him supper, bed and shelter. With that money he reached the Ramsjo Ironworks and the ironmaster mistook him as his old acquaintance. With the persuasion of Edla, the ironmaster's daughter, the peddler accepted the invitation for the Christmas cheer. When the ironmaster realised his mistake about the peddler he ordered him to go. Edla intrceded and took the peddler at the breakfast table. Her sympathy, noble attitude, open heartedness, hospitality and kindness had a significant impact on the peddler. While leaving he left behind a Christmas present for Edla, thirty kronor for crofter and a letter stating that her nobleness had given him a chance to cleanse himself.

A language of a country is the identity of that nation. M.Hamel, in his last lesson, tells his students about the beauty of their language, French, which is now being replaced by German because of the orders that have come from Berlin. He says that it is the most beautiful language in the world. He describes it as the clearest and the most logical of all the languages. The teacher elaborates the beauty of his county's language. He says that during colonial rule when the colonial power tries to enforce political and cultural dominance by imposing their own language if the natives are attached to their native language, their identity remains intact. They could say to have the key to their prison as long as they are holding fast with their language. These words of Mr. Hamel creates a sense of reverence in the hearts of the village elders, who have come to thank him for his forty years of faithful service, for their language and regretted not paying sincere attention towards it.

The borders that we see around us are all man made. These borders turn some countries into enemies against one another. However, humanity knows no bounds of any such divisions. Dr. Sadao Hoki was in no sense less patriotic that any other Japanese. He loved his country and hated his enemies as much as other citizens of Japan but his sensitivity towards other human beings led him to operate upon the American prisoner of war. Being a skilled doctor by profession, he just could not manage to see a patient die in front of him. The sense of humanity overpowered him and made him to save the life of his 'enemy'. The story, therefore, exemplifies that human goodness surpasses all other factors.
