The districts of Alsace and Lorraine were under the regime of France. During the Franco-Prussian war (1870-1871) France was defeated and both these districts became the part of Prussia (Germany). Earlier they were reading their own language, i.e. the French.
With the new set up, an order was issued from Berlin to teach only the German in these two districts. M. Hamel was a teacher who had been teaching the French for the last 40 years.
In his last lesson, he told that from the next day the students would be learning the German from a new teacher. They won’t be learning their own most beautiful, clearest and the logical language which is quite foreign to them. In a way he told the significance of their own language and aroused their patriotic feelings. The old villagers too endorsed his views. There came a sudden changes in Franz.
He developed a sort of great disliking for German. He heard and saw the pigeons cooing on the roofs. He immediately remarked : “Will they make them sing in German, even the pigeons ?” It is worthnoting here that the Germans can impose German language on the people of Alsace and Lorraine powerfully but they can’t impose this language on the birds, etc. They can enslave the people but have no authority to compel the cooing pigeons. Any forceful imposition will cease their love for them.

Most of the arable land in Champaran was divided into large estates owned by Englishmen and worked by Indian tenants. The chief commercial crop was indigo. The landlords compelled all the tenants to plant three-twentieths or 15 per cent of their holdings with indigo and surrender the entire indigo harvest as rent. This was done by long-term contract. Also, the landlords upon having learned that Germany had developed synthetic indigo, obtained agreements from the sharecroppers to pay them compensation for being released from the 15 per cent arrangement. The sharecropping arrangement was irksome to the peasants and many signed willingly. Those who resisted, engaged lawyers while the landlords hired thugs. In the meantime, the information about synthetic indigo reached the illiterate peasants who had signed and now they wanted their money back.

Visit to Sanchi Stupa
Anita,
Kendriya Vidyalaya, March 10, 2017
A trip was organised by the History society of our school to one of the most well-known historical place, Sanchi Stupa, on March 08, 2017. The trip included a group of twenty students taken to the place by the school bus. We were also accompanied by the historian, Mr. Akash Verma, who made us familiar with the historical presence of the monument. Sanchi Stupa is an important place for Biddhist pilgrims. Stated to be the world heritage site, its nucleus is a simple hemispherical brick structure built over the relics of the Buddha. Sanchi Stupas are noteworthy for their gateways as they contain ornamented depiction of incidents from the life of Buddha and his previous incarnations as Bodhisattvas described in Jataka tales. It is one of the most wonderful structures of ancient India. It has been included by the UNESCO as one of the heritage site of the sworld. It is a fine example of the development of the Buddhist architecture. After the visit, a lunch was organised for the students in a restaurant named 'Fine Dine' situated near the monument. The bus returned to the school at around 6:00 PM. The trip was the amalgamation of knowledge and fun.

The Angelus is a special prayer recited by Catholics three times a day, at 6am, noon, and 6pm and is accompanied by the ringing of the Angelus bell. The name comes from the Latin word for Angel and the prayer itself reminds us of how Jesus Christ assumed our human nature through the Mystery of the Incarnation. The Pope recites the Angelus prayer in St Peter’s Square every Sunday at midday. He also gives a brief reflection on the Gospel of the day and often comments on some issue of international concern. The Pope’s words are broadcast all over the world on radio and television and widely shared on social media. From Easter to Pentecost the Regina Coeli is prayed instead of the Angelus. This prayer commemorates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and, like the Angelus, concludes with the recitation of the Gloria three times.

Subject: Illicit selling of liquor deadly chemicals like anthrax
Sir:
I am writing this letter to your good self to express my deep concern over the issue of illicit selling of liquor and deadly chemicals like anthrax in our country. Illicit liquor may contain excess amount of alcohol and other dangerous chemicals. Easy availability of illicit liquor tends to make the youth addict to it.
Chemicals like anthrax can easily be misused by terrorists or anarchists to spread terror in societies.
Through the medium of your daily I appeal to the concerned authorities to look into the matter and take strict action against culprits who are making such deadly substances easily available to the youth and anti-social elements. I hope you will give my views enough space your daily for awareness and caution.
Yours truly,
Himakshi

Poor rag-pickers like Saheb spend the early years of their lives looking for gold in garbage dumps. The parents of these street children have no fixed income. They wage war against poverty and hunger. They have no dreams except finding the means of survival. Garbage to them is gold. It is the source of their daily bread and provides a roof over their heads. He ends up as a servant at a tea-stall and loses his freedom.
Mukesh, the son of a poor bangle-maker of Firozabad, has a dream of becoming a motor mechanic. He wants to learn to drive a car. He thinks of joining a garage to fulfil his dream. He knows that the garage is far away, yet he has decided to walk. He realises the reality and is willing to overcome the obstacles. His daring to rise and decision to get free from the trap laid by vicious moneylenders and middle men arouse a sense of hope.Deprived of education, proper food and upbringing, these children are forced into labour early in life.

Character of M. Hamel
M. Hamel was a true French man. Teaching at Alsace for forty years, he had become a part of its people. He was an honest teacher. He did not blame his students alone for poor learning. He also held himself responsible for the same. He was very patriotic as he appealed to his countrymen to hold fast to their mother tongue to be free from the Prussians. According to him the French language was the most beautiful, the clearest and the most logical language in the world. He appealed to his countrymen to guard it and never forget it. He was emotionally attached to the school and all his students. However, he was very brave and strong. He was really sorry for not making sincere efforts to teach French to his countrymen. At the end, he became so emotional that he could not speak

The story has an appropriate and suggestive title. It is the centre of attention throughout and the whole story revolves around it. The beginning of the story serves as preparation for it. The unusual quietness at school, presence of village elders and the teacher in his Sunday best dress-all point out to the unusual and unique occasion-the last lesson in French in a French village school in a district conquered by the Prussians. While delivering the last lesson, the teacher wants to transmit all his knowledge in one go. He explains everything with patience and the students as well as old villagers listen attentively.
For the narrator it is an unforgettable experience. “Ah, how well I remember it, that last lesson,” says he. Old Hauser is crying and his voice trembled with emotion. As the teacher is unable to express His emotions because of choked throat, he ends the lesson by writing Wive La France’ on the blackboard. He makes a gesture with his hand to indicate that the school is dismissed and students can go home.

The rattrap has been depicted as the symbol of the whole world with its lands, seas, cities and villages. The world seems like a big rattrap to the peddler who thinks it does not have any other purpose but to set baits for people. It offers riches and joys, shelter and food, heat and clothing, exactly as the rattrap offers cheese and pork to the rat. But as soon as anyone lets himself be tempted to touch the bait, it closes in on him and then everything comes to an end.
