The servants at his house were aware of Rajkumar Shukla as the poor yeoman who pestered their master to help the indigo sharecroppers. So, when Shukla and Gandhi came to his house while Prasad was out of town, they let him stay on the grounds with his companion Gandhi whom they took to be another peasant. But Gandhi was not permitted to draw water from the well in case some drops from his bucket polluted the entire source as they were not sure if he was an untouchable or not.
