Ans.: The way Charley came across Sam’s letter was surrounded in mystery. Among his oldest first-day covers, he found an envelope. The envelope containing the letter bore the address of his grandfather. It was written on July 18, 1894. The postmark showed the Picture of President Garfield. Generally the first day covers have blank papers in them, but this one contained a letter. The letter was addressed to Charley. In the letter Sam had informed Charley that he was living on the third level. He had also told Charley and his wife to keep looking for the third level. Clearly, the letter was a product of Charley’s imagination

1. Use especially to mean “very” or “extremely,” as in these examples:

  • There is nothing especially radical about that idea.
  • The food was not especially good.

2. Use especially when something stands out from all the others, and you want the meaning of “particularly,” as in these examples:

  • She can't be sure she will win, especially at this early stage of the campaign.
  • The appetizers and especially the soup were delicious.

3. When you want to convey the meaning “for a special purpose,” or “specifically,” you can use either especially or specially. They are both correct.

  • The speech was written especially/specially for the occasion.

4. When you want to convey the meaning “in a special manner”, as in this example below, use specially. In this context, especially would sound odd or wrong to most native speakers.

  • I don't want to be treated specially.
  • I don't want to be treated especially

The instructor first put a belt around him to which a rope was attached. This rope went through a pulley that ran on an overhead cable. He held on to the end of the rope, and Douglas swam like this .for weeks. Three months later the tension began to decrease. Then he taught Douglas to exhale under water, and to raise his nose and inhale. After repeated practice, he shed a partof the panic when his head went under water. Next, the instructor held him at the side of thepool and made him kick with his legs. Gradually, after weeks of doing so, his legs relaxed when he had perfected each piece, he put them together into an integrated whole. Thus, bit by bit, the instructor built a swimmer out of Douglas.

What instructions were given by Dr. Sadao to the American before he left for the sea?

<hr />

Sadao instructed him to row and stay on the island for the arrival of a Korean fishing boat. He advised him not to bum any fire for fear of being caught. He gave him his flash light and told to signal two flashes. In case he ran short of food or still he was on the island, one flash would suffice. He sternly warned him to flash the light only at the sunset and never during the darkness.

The ‘grandeur of the dooms’ is a reference to our mighty and dead ancestors who have created beautiful objects for us. On the other hand, the ‘endless fountain’ is the everlasting joy provided to us by the bounties of nature in the form of nectar pouring on us from heaven.

A thing of beauty provides shelter and comfort in many ways. It is like a bower, a place under the shade of a tree where we can rest. It gives us a sleep filled with sweet dreams. The streams and forests provide a cooling covert for us in the hot weather.

The 'grandeur' is associated with the 'mighty dead' because the splendour of the deeds inspires us through their sagas. The legends and stories of martyrs enthuse us. Through their legends, the mighty dead continue to live and to be active as spiritual powers. These give us pleasure and divine influence like an eternal fountain that is bestowed to us from heaven.

This line suggests that things of beauty bind us to the earth with a beautiful connection. According to the poet, even if the world is not worth living because of the innumerable reasons that ultimately result in gloom and depression, the zeal to live a happy and content life can be derived from the sight of the beautiful bounties of nature around us.
