wherever he went. To get rid of it, he made a strong determination. He decided to overcome his fear through his “will.” He engaged an instructor who would perfect him in swimming. The instructor first helped him drive away his fear, and then gave him many exercises besides teaching him to exhale and inhale in water. The practice went on for months together, during which his fear came back to haunt him, but his desire and firm will made him persist in his- efforts. It was only through sheer determination and diligence that Douglas could not only counter his terror, but also become an expert swimmer. He swam across and back lakes to ensure that his fear of water did not return. He had now completely lost his fear. His desire, determination and diligence succeeded in banishing his fear of water.........

Stephen Spender uses a fine metaphor “History is theirs whose language is the sun.” All know that the world is governed by the rich, dictator and the powerful people. But there are people who create their history through their own language, ideas and views. They influence the public through warmth of speech and ideas. So their language must contain the warmth and strength of the sun to create history.

Keeping Quiet is "no truck with death". In this poem, the poet is asking everybody to keep quiet and still for a while. With this phrase, he wants to clarify that silence does not mean a complete association wih death. Rather, it should be a moment of speculation and introspection.

Charlie was a young man living in New York. He was married to Louisa. Charlie's hobby was stamp-collection (philately). Charlie appeared to be suffering from fear, insecurity and fear of the war-ridden world. He was looking for an escape from this world. His longing for some idyllic and peaceful place like Galesburg made him stray to a corridor at Grand Central Station that took him to the Third Level of the station from where one could take train to the past, year 1894. When he shared this incidence with his wife, she felt angry at it; she asked him to see his psychiatrist friend, Sam. Sam explained the unique experience to be Charlie’s waking dream wish fulfillment. He further explained it could have happened because of his unhappiness or hobby of stamp collection.
