M. Hamel was a true French man. Teaching at Alsace for forty years, he had become a part of its people. He was an honest teacher. He did not blame his students alone for poor learning. He also held himself responsible for the same. He was very patriotic as he appealed to his countrymen to hold fast to their mother tongue to be free from the Prussians. According to him the French language was the most beautiful, the clearest and the most logical language in the world. He urged on his countrymen to guard it and never forget it. He was deeply attached to the school and all his students. However, he was very brave and strong. He was really regretful for not making sincere efforts to teach French to his countrymen. At the end, he became so emotional that he could not speak.

Life is a wonderful gift of God meant to be lived very cautiously. At times untoward incidents happen so haphazardly so unpredictably out of the blue that you are left shocked. One such sad incident happened to me a few years ago on the DIwali eve whose memories are indelibly etched on my mind.
I along with my mother was on my way to my friend’s house in the countryside to give him the festival sweets. It was twilight. The sun had just set beyond the horizon. There is a hairpin bend just a mile before his house that I always enjoyed during the ride. As I turned my bike along the hairpin turn, a pup came exactly in front of my bike…it happened so suddenly…my bike ran over the pup…it was in excruciating pain…it whined, writhed and shrieked…I stopped…my mother behind me…I thought of rushing it to a vet in the city. But it breathed its last in front of my eyes.
The cute, innocent face and its painful whine haunt me until this day. The memories of that sad incident have become my greatest regret. I have become very sensitive to all animals. In order to atone for my mistake, I kept a dog and gave it all the love and care I could. It lived with my family for more than 15 years.
Now, I pay extra care to animals, especially pups on the road. On many occasions, a pup came in front of my vehicle; but I was always cautious not to run over them even inadvertently.

Sam's letter from the third level-Galesburg, July 18, 1894-to Charley read that initially, he had only hoped that Charley was right about the third level but now, he believed It. He had found the third level and had been there for two weeks. The third level was peaceful, hospitable, and welcoming. He wanted Charley and Louisa to join him there and wanted them to keep looking till they found it. The letter brought out the difference between the tranquil pre-World War era and the tension- ridden world of the present. Then there was warmth, hospitality, and simple pleasures. The clean carefree environment reflected the mood of the people. It was like paradise as compared to the insecure and worrisome life that one led later. Despite the material advantage, one would gladly exchange the current life for that life.

Franz didn’t want to go to school that day because it was a fine warm day. The weather was very fine and there were birds chirping at the edge of the woods. He heard the sound of the Prussian soldiers drilling at the back of sawmill. Moreover, he was already late for the school and had not prepared his lesson on participles. He knew that he would be scolded by the teacher for that. So he wanted to run away from school.

The order from Berlin brought all the routine hustle-bustle of the school life to a stand- still. The teacher, M. Hamel, became more sympathetic to his students and taught his lessons with more patience. The students became more attentive in their classes. The villagers, who were sitting at the usually empty back benches and had come to show their respect and gratitude to M. Hamel, regretted not going to school more than they did. The order also brought about a great change in the feelings of the people towards their country and their native language. There was a general sadness about not being able to utilise the opportunities of learning French when it was easily accessible.
