Because oxygen forms hydrogen bonding whereas sulphur do not

Sneha Sheoran 7 years, 11 months ago

Because of the small size and high electronegativity of oxygen molecules of water are highly associated through hydrogen bonding resulting in its liquid state sulphur because of its larger size cannot form h-bonding and thus h2s remains as discrete gaseous molecule

Boiling***

Lekha Raj 7 years, 11 months ago

Ortho nitrophenol is an intra-molecular hydrogen bonded compound whereas p nitrophenol is an inter-molecular hydrogen bonded compound.(INTRA MOLECULAR HYDROGEN BONDING MEANS HYDROGEN BOND FORMATION TAKES PLACE IN THE SAME MOLECULE B/W TWO FUNCTIONAL GROUPS.AND,INTER MOLECULAR HYDROGEN BONDING TAKES PLACE B/W TWO MOLECULES.THAT MEANS P NITROPHENOL IS STRONGLY BONDED THAN O NITROPHENOL.) This simply implies that p nirophenol needs more heat /energy to overcome from this intermolecular hydrogen bonding than o nitrophenol.Hence o nitrophenol has lower boilin point.

Sparsh Anand 7 years, 11 months ago

Due to less symmetry of o nitro phenol
