Nitrolic acids are organic compounds with the functional group RC(NO2)=NOH. They are prepared by the reaction of nitroalkanes with base and nitrite sources:[1] RCH2NO2 + HNO2 → RC(NO2)=NOH + H2O The conversion was first demonstrated by Victor Meyer using nitroethane.[2] The reaction proceeds via the intermediacy of the nitronate anion.

A single half-cell does not exist independently as reduction and oxidation occur simultaneously therefore single electrode potential cannot be measured.

It is due to the fact that neither by itself the oxidation occurs nor the reduction occurs . Experimentally, the absolute value of single electrode can't be determined, because independently half-cell reaction cannot occur.

The Standard Hydrogen Electrode is often abbreviated to SHE, and its standard electrode potential is declared to be 0 at a temperature of 298K. This is because it acts as a reference for comparison with any other electrode .

The redox half cell of the SHE is where the following reaction takes place:

2H⁺ (aq) + 2e^– → H₂ (g)

The reaction given above generally takes place on a platinum electrode. The pressure of the hydrogen gas present in this half cell equals 1 bar.
