The stone dropped will reach the ground first . Start with the extreme case that the horizontal speed is grater than or equal to the escape velocity of Earth . The stone thrown will never reach the ground For lower speed the stone will delayed by the changing direction of down. Even for a very small horizontal speed the stone is delayed only slightly.
