A progressive wave has points of given phase, such as a crest or a dip which travel forwards, whilst the medium remains where it is. ... Standing waves are formed by the superposition of two travelling waves of the same frequency (with the same polarisation and the same amplitude) travelling in opposite directions. A progressive or travelling wave moves away from the source , or it moves relative to a coordinate system in a fluid , or it advances on the sea surface or at an intermediate depth. A stationary or standing wave remains in a constant position . A progressive wave is a wave where continuous energy transfer takes place between the crest and trough (transverse wave) or between rarefactions and compressions (long waves).

In physics, measurements are a way of communicating with the Cosmos. Each measurement yields a numeric value. Each digit of a given number is critical to the process of measurement. As a result, some digits are more important or “significant” than others.

In chemistry, Significant figures are the digits of value which carry meaning towards the resolution of the measurement. They are also called significant figures in chemistry.

The quantities that can be measured are called physical quantity.

Gaurav Seth 5 years, 5 months ago

In physics, a physical quantity is any physical property that can be quantified, that is, be measured using numbers. Examples of physical quantities are mass, amount of substance, length, time, temperature, electric current, light intensity, force, velocity, density, and many others. A physical quantity is always measured of natural non-living objects (Inanimate objects)

Errors which can either be positive or negative are called Systematic errors. They are of following types:

  1. Instrument errors: These arise from imperfect design or calibration error in the instrument. Worn off scale, zero error in a weighing scale are some examples of instrument errors.
  2. Imperfections in experimental techniques: If the technique is not accurate (for example measuring temperature of human body by placing thermometer under armpit resulting in lower temperature than actual) and due to the external conditions like temperature, wind, humidity, these kinds of errors occur.

Lucifer ? Morningstar? 5 years, 5 months ago

A systematic error is one that results from a persistent issue and leads to a consistent error in your measurements

The beat frequency is always equal to the difference in frequency of the two notes that interfere to produce the beats. So if two sound waves with frequencies of 256 Hz and 254 Hz are played simultaneously, a beat frequency of 2 Hz will be detected.

When two bodies move in opposite direction, then the Relative Speed = Sum of Speeds i.e for e.g. for a person sitting in a train moving with a Speed of 40 km/hr in the west direction, another train which is going towards east with a Speed of 40 km/hr, will appear to move at a Speed of (40+40) = 80 km/hr.

Dimensional formula is an expression for the unit of a physical quantity in terms of the fundamental quantities. The fundamental quantities are mass (M), length (L), and time (T). A dimensional formula is expressed in terms of powers of M,L and T.

The units in which they are measured are thus called fundamental units. In this textbook, the fundamental physical quantities are taken to be length, mass, time, and electric current. Physical quantities are classified into two types. There are fundamental and derived quantities. Fundamental or base quantities are quantities which cannot be expressed in terms of any other physical quantities. These are length, mass, time, electric current, temperature, luminous intensity and amount of substance.
