It is true that the story ‘The Summer of the Beautiful White Horse’ doesn’t have any breath taking adventure. Nor does it contain any exciting action. The story revolves round two poor Armenian boys Aram and Mourad. It describes their passion for horse-riding. Passion for riding makes Mourad steal a beautiful white horse. But trust and honesty are the hallmarks of their tribe. They maintain the fame and pride of their family. They return the horse to its rightful owner. The writer William Saroyan weaves a simple story into an interesting tale. The description is lucid and simple. The pace is relaxed but natural. The story keeps the readers engaged till the end.
Certainly, the storyline lacks puffs and punches. But the narrator holds the interest of the readers. He reveals the natural urge of children for fun and adventure. Garoghlanians are poor but proud and honest people. They consider that stealing a horse for fun and riding is not stealing. After all, they are not going to sell it. But ultimately, the pride and honesty of their tribe overpower their childish pranks. They decide to return the horse to its rightful owner John Byro.

When the author’s parents were settled in the city, they called the author and grandmother to come there. That was the turning point. Though the author and grandmother shared the same room, she did not go with him to the school. She gradually remained away from his activities and him.

Taplow is a boy of sixteen. He is pure at heart. He is a boy with no whims and fancy of his own. It is his frank nature which make us appreciate him all the more. It is great to watch that even after absenting himself from school for a day, he is ready to wait the next day to meet his teacher. His patience is all the more most attractive feature. Taplow paints before us a picture of a boy with divine nature. Inspite of having many good qualities Taplow is also good at flattery. He is waiting for the teacher because he wants extra marks for the test. Still inspite of follies he behaves in a simple, innocent manner. Infact he has not been touched by modernism and has a pure, serene heart.

Disadvantages of Social Media
Despite having such unique advantages, social media is considered to be one of the most harmful elements of society. If the use of social media is not monitored, it can lead to grave consequences.
It is harmful because it invades your privacy like never before. The oversharing happening on social media makes children a target for predators and hackers. It also leads to cyberbullying which affects any person significantly.
Thus, the sharing on social media especially by children must be monitored at all times. Next up is the addition of social media which is quite common amongst the youth.
This addiction hampers with the academic performance of a student as they waste their time on social media instead of studying. Social media also creates communal rifts. Fake news is spread with the use of it, which poisons the mind of peace-loving citizens.
In short, surely social media has both advantages and disadvantages. But, it all depends on the user at the end. The youth must particularly create a balance between their academic performances, physical activities, and social media. Excess use of anything is harmful and the same thing applies to social media. Therefore, we must strive to live a satisfying life with the right balance.

Moreover, live lectures are now possible because of social media. You can attend a lecture happening in America while sitting in India.
Furthermore, as more and more people are distancing themselves from newspapers, they are depending on social media for news. You are always updated on the latest happenings of the world through it. A person becomes more socially aware of the issues of the world.
In addition, it strengthens bonds with your loved ones. Distance is not a barrier anymore because of social media. For instance, you can easily communicate with your friends and relatives overseas.
Most importantly, it also provides a great platform for young budding artists to showcase their talent for free. You can get great opportunities for employment through social media too.
Another advantage definitely benefits companies who wish to promote their brands. Social media has become a hub for advertising and offers you great opportunities for connecting with the customer.

The grandmother used to feed street dogs with pieces of chapattis when the grandmother and grandson duo returned home from the ‘templeschool’. At a later stage, in the city, when the author was engrossed in his higher studies, she used to spend some time feeding birds like sparrows. They had become so friendly with her that they would perch on her legs.
When the grandmother died, thousands of sparrows sat around the corpse without any chirping, all in silence. They did not touch the bread crumbs which the author’s mother had thrown for them. They flew away quietly when the dead body was carried off and never came back.

They have been learning English for one year.
"Has been" and "have been" are both in the present perfect tense. "Has been" is used in the third-person singular and "have been" is used for first- and second-person singular and all plural uses. The present perfect tense refers to an action that began at some time in the past and is still in progress. For example, if I started studying art when I was 13 years old and I am still studying art, I would say "I have been studying art since I was 13 years old."

"Grandmother" was an old wrinkly woman, who couldn't have grown older. She was short, plump and slightly bent. She always wore a white saari, with silver locks covering her face, due to which the narrator describes her as being a "winter landscape in the mountains". She has a calm, gentle and reassuring face. She always has one hand supporting her back while the other is busy in telling the beads of rosary.
She is a saintly woman, quite religious and kind. This characteristics can be observed throughout the lesson, where the grandmother spends all her time in chanting prayers. She is very kind-hearted which is clearly seen from the instances where she feeds stale chapatis to dogs and crumbled bread to the sparrows.
She never shows her emotions, but loves her grand son dearly. Even when the author leaves for abroad she pretends that she doesn't care, but, she has a lot of affection and blessings for her dear grandson.
She is accustomed to old traditions, and isn't really interested in science and modern education. She has an old mindset due to which she revolts when the author tells her about the idea of learning music, as she believes music is a monopoly of harlots and beggars.
Despite her disagreements and conflicts, grandmother is purely a saintly woman with a heart of gold.

- There are four principal biological systems of the Earth - (1) fisheries (2) forests (3) grasslands (4) croplands, as pointed by Mr Lester R Brown.
- Unfortunately, the human claims on these systems as reaching points, where their productivity is getting impaired.
- The protein hungry world is over-fishing every day. In poor countries, local forests are being .destroyed everyday to get firewood for cooking.
- The growing use of dung for burning deprives the soil of an important natural fertilizer.
- The forests precede mankind and deserts follow. The world's tropical forests are eroding at the rate of forty to fifty millions acres per year. Also, grasslands and croplands are being converted into deserts and wastelands

Mr Lester R. Brown in his thought-provoking book, The Global Economic Prospect, points out that the earth’s principal biological systems, i.e., fisheries, forests, grasslands, and croplands form the foundation of the global economic system. In addition to supplying our food, these four systems provide almost all the raw materials for industry except minerals and petroleum-derived synthetics. It is because of this that fisheries collapse, forests disappear, grasslands are converted into barren wastelands and croplands deteriorate. In a protein-conscious and protein-hungry world, over-fishing is common. In poor countries, local forests are being demolished in order to procure firewood for cooking. Since tropical forests house various species of life, they face extinction as a result of its destruction.

The chapter ‘The Portrait of a Lady’ is the story of the author and his grandmother. The grandmother was an old woman with a wrinkled face. The author had always seen her like this, for the past twenty years. She appeared to be so old that he could not imagine her being ‘young and pretty’, someone who had a husband. She was short, fat and slightly bent. The author had seen his grandfather’s portrait- an old man with a turban and a long white beard covering his chest. To the author, his grandfather didn’t seem like a man who could have a wife and children, but someone who could have lots of grandchildren. His grandmother used to move around the house in ‘Spotless White’ with her one hand resting on her waist and her other hand counting the beads of her rosary.
In the initial days, the author and his grandmother had a good relationship. She used to wake him up and get him ready for school. She used to pack the things required by him for the day and walked him to school everyday. She used to visit the temple that was attached to the school. She had a routine of reading the scriptures. The author along with other children sat on the verandah singing alphabets and morning prayers. They both used to come back home together with stray dogs roaming around them as his grandmother would carry the stale chapattis to feed them.
Soon, the parents of the author who went to the city to settle in and called them. As they reached the city, his relationship with his grandmother took a turn. Though they shared the room, there bond grew apart. He started going to an English medium school, she no longer accompanied him to his school, and there were no longer stray dogs who roamed around them while walking back home. She, however, used to ask him about his day and what he had learned. She didn’t understand anything as everything was in another language which she could not understand. She didn’t approve of the new syllabus that he was studying because she thought that they did not teach him about God and the scriptures. They saw less of each other.
As the days passed, he grew older and soon went to the university. He had his own room and this made their relationship sour. She stopped talking to everyone and spent her whole day sitting at her spinning wheel, reciting prayers and moving beads of the rosary with one hand. However, she loved feeding sparrows in the verandah at dawn. Breaking bread into pieces and feeding it to the birds was her daily routine. The birds would sit on her legs, her head, some even on the shoulders.
Soon, the author decided to go abroad for further studies. She came to the railway station to leave him off. She was not sentimental, continuously recited her prayers, her mind lost in the prayers, and she kissed him on the forehead. After five years, as he returnedhome, she was there, came to pick him at the station, was still the same as she had been five years ago. She clasped him within her arms and didn’t say a word. She still used to feed her sparrows.
One day, she didn’t recite her prayers but instead collected the women of the neighbourhood, got a drum and started singing. The next morning, she was ill with mild fever. The doctor said that there was nothing to worry about but she was sure that her end was near.
She didn’t want to waste her time talking to anyone in the family anymore but spend her last hours in reciting her prayers laying on the bed. She died and so her body lay on the bed, lifeless. As they prepared for her funeral, they saw all the sparrows sitting in the verandah around her, mourning her death.
