Mahatma Gandhi said that Mother Nature has provided resources that are sufficient for everyone but people because of their greedy nature are trying to keep a lot more than what is required for themselves creating socio-economic disparities. He also meant that if resources are shared equally, no person would go hungry or thirsty.

(i) It means that the earth has abundant resources to satisfy everyone’s needs but in our greed and hurry to develop, we have been recklessly exploiting these resources.

(ii) In the name of development, we have indulged in activities such as deforestation, overgrazing, encroachment into forest lands, overuse of ground water, use of plastics, etc.

(iii) The exploitation of natural resources not only harms the environment but may cripple the future generations of the development process itself.

(iv) If fossil fuels are exhausted, the development of all countries would be at risk.

(v) Thus, there is a need for conservation and judicious use of resources for development.

‘Tutankhamun’ means the ‘living image of Amun’. Amun was the major god in the ancient Egyptian society whose temples and images were destroyed by a preceding ruler named Akhenaten. He destroyed the ancient religious order of the Egyptians. Tut’s changing of his name represents his efforts in the restoration of the old ways that were once destroyed.

One particular type of group united for the same purpose should wear the same type of clothes that is uniform. The concept of uniform is the only most visible element of any school regardless of caste, complexion, social status etc. Uniformity is the symbol of discipline. Uniform is a unique idea for schools because it helps students not to divert their attention to fashionable garments while at school. If uniforms were non-existent, students might be victimized by others because of the expensive clothes they choose to wear.  Attention will naturally go on the clothes people wear instead of on schoolwork, which is what school is all about. Uniform is the only source to avoid fashion parade from schools. When students wear clothes of their choices on their birthdays even then sometimes objectionable attire is observed. Uniform is the only source to avoid such objection regularly. Each morning, students do not have to waste their time to decide what to wear, they simply get dressed in their uniform. In this way getting ready for school becomes hassle-free for students. Time wasted on deciding what to wear could be better spent on doing schoolwork.

It makes our life more disciplined as we have to fall in a habit of taking care of a particular attire like every country’s army has a particular uniform. It has been rightly said that whatever we are or whatever we will be in future it is all because of our habits and uniformity is such a habit which binds us in a great discipline which is a great key to success. We can easily judge an institution if its workers are wearing a uniform. The same is in schools it is a feeling of equality, it is a feeling of responsibility, it is a feeling of belonging to one another and ultimately it is a reminder of being in a group assembled for the same purpose. It uniform exists in schools it means that the purpose is kept in mind and being chased.

Here are some of the most important advantages: 1) A dress code promotes a more serious school atmosphere which emphasizes academics and promotes good behavior. ... 5) As opposed to uniforms, dress codes still allow students to wear what they want which leaves students with a sense of choice and expression.

School should be a platform from where the students can hone their talents. However, it is unfortunate that our system has turned education into a demanding monster. Education received in the school may not be the true education. True education promotes free growth and all-round development. But, the school system interferes with such development. There are a lot of restrictions and formalities in the form of assessments and activities. They are very time consuming and dreary.   The modern education system does not leave any space for a child to nurture his/her individual talent. They are all burdened with rote-learning which is measured by grades. This kind of system is almost claustrophobic for individual talent and a hindrance to the holistic development of a child.

Mother's Day is a comical satire. The story is a simple one, yet it strongly condemns the position of women in society. Our mothers and wives work hard daily, turning our houses into homes. They receive no wages and have no weekends off and work all day long, round the clock. Little do we realise the hard work they put in to make it all perfect. We take them for granted and never appreciate them or stop by to drop a word of 'thanks'. The story very clearly states that our mothers and wives have equal right to relax, enjoy their lives and deserve acknowledgement and appreciation. They sacrifice their whole lives building ours'. Husbands stay busy at work and kids are occupied in their own lives. Amidst all this women lose their self trying to contain our world.

Just on the second day when they left Cape Town, Wavewalker began to face all kinds of troubles. Strong gales lashed the boat for the next few weeks. The size of the waves was really alarming. They went up as high as the main mast. The captain took immediate steps to save the boat. The boat was slowed down. The storm jib was dropped. Heavy mooring ropes were lashed across the stern. Lifelines were attached. Oilskins and life-jackets were donned. A tremendous explosion shook the deck. A torrent of green and white water broke over the ship. Wavewalker was near capsizing. Her masts had fallen flat. Waves tossed him around the deck like a rag doll. Larry and Herb continued pumping water out like madmen. If they couldn’t make some repairs, they would surely sink. Waterproof covers across the open holes were covered. Most of the water was now being thrown over the sides.

All the urgent steps were taken. Fortunately, they proved quite effective. By the morning of January 6, the wind eased. Wavewalker rode out storm. But still it couldn’t hold for long to reach Australia. Hence, the search for islands began. In the end, Wavewalker had a cheerful landing at lle Amsterdam.

War brings with it death and destruction. Marga Minco's short story "The Address" describes human predicament that follows war. War had caused an upheaval in the lives of the people of Holland, as they lost their lives and homes. Mrs S was also a victim of the war. So when the narrator, Mrs S's daughter, went to Mrs Dorling's house to claim those articles with which her mother's precious memories were associated, Mrs Dorling was surprised to see the narrator at her door and even pretended not to recognize her. The narrator was shocked to see the 'nice belongings' of her mother lying in Mrs Dorling's house. She felt nostalgic and the things appeared to have lost their worth in the absence of their true owner. Therefore, she decided to leave those things and forget the address forever. Thus the story presents the upheaval in the lives of the narrator and her mother caused by the war. The story shows how war brings a dehumanizing effect on human beings. It kills the finer feelings of love and sympathy. It makes persons cruel and selfish.

The title 'Ailing Planet' is aptly justified. Man's recklessness, greed and indifference to the needs of the planet, have literally made its condition exactly like a patient needing immediate treatment. The illness of pollution has reached its final stage.

The following lines in the text support the title “The Ailing Planet”.

  • “Are we to leave our successors a scorched planet of advancing deserts, impoverished landscapes and ailing environment.
  • A three-year study using satellites and aerial photography conducted by the United Nations, warns that the environment has deteriorated so badly that it is ‘critical’ in many of the eighty-eight countries investigated.

The writer’s grandmother was a very old woman. She was religious-minded and noble-hearted. In the house, she always carried a rosary in her hands. She kept telling the beads of the rosary and reciting prayers silently. She read holy books in the village temple. She would say her prayers while getting the child ready for school. She used to feed the dogs in the village and the sparrows in the city. She treated the author with the utmost affection. The author was sent abroad for five years for further studies. He thought that this might upset his grandmother, but she did not object and went to the railway station to see him off. When he returned after five years, she was there to welcome him. She was so happy that she collected the women in her neighbourhood and sang songs and beat the drum to celebrate his homecoming.

She was not formally educated. She had no knowledge of English and Science. But she was serious about the education of her grandson. She even helped him with his lessons in the village. But she was disturbed to know that music lessons were being given at the city school. It pained her to note that there was no teaching about God and holy books. She hated music. She belonged to the old generation.

Margaret Thatcher (1925-2013), the United Kingdom’s first female prime minister, served from 1979 until 1990. During her time in office, she reduced the influence of trade unions, privatized certain industries, scaled back public benefits and changed the terms of political debate, much like her friend and ideological ally, U.S. President Ronald Reagan. Nicknamed the “Iron Lady,” she opposed Soviet communism and fought a war to maintain control of the Falkland Islands. The longest-serving British prime minister of the 20th century, Thatcher was eventually pressured into resigning by members of her own Conservative Party.

Holistic is an adjective that describes things related to the idea that the whole is more than the sum of its parts. In other words, that the entirety of something must be considered instead of just considering its parts.
