Cis-trans isomerism is common in alkenes because there is restricted rotation about double bonds. Explanation: For example, an alkene such as but-2-ene has two different groups on each alkene carbon. It can exist as E − Z isomers that differ in the positions of the substituents on the double-bonded atoms. The double bond prevents rotation about the C=C axis. So the molecule exists as two isomers, with substituents on the same side (cis) or on the opposite side (trans) of the double bond.

Nitric acid reacts with copper because of the nitrate ion. It is the nitrate ion that causes the copper to dissolve, not the H . There is no reaction between copper and HCl because neither H nor Cl is able to react with the metal.

Nitroso refers to a functional group in organic chemistry which has the NO group attached to an organic moiety. As such, various nitroso groups can be categorized as C-nitroso compounds, S-nitroso compounds, N-nitroso compounds, and O-nitroso compounds.

The rule says that in every addition reaction across the unsymmetrical double bond , the negative part of addendum molecule goes to that carbon atom having greatest no. of HYDROGEN.

Lavanya ❤️? 5 years, 8 months ago

anti markovnikov's rule means the hydrogen will be add to the carbon atom which has less number of hydrogen atom.

2 KMnO4 + 5 H2SO3→ K2SO4 + 2 MnSO4 + 2 H2SO4 + 3 H2O

2 moles of KMnO4 react with 5 moles of sulphite ion in acidic solution. Thus, 2/5 moles of KMnO4 will react with 1 mole of sulphite ion.

  • All gases are made up of molecules which are constantly and persistently moving in random directions.
  • The separation between the molecules is much greater than the size of molecules.
  • When a gas sample is kept in a container, the molecules of the sample do not exert any force on the walls of the container during the collision.
  • The time interval of collision between two molecules, and between a molecule and the wall is considered to be very small.
  • All the collisions between molecules and even between molecules and wall are considered to be elastic.
  • All the molecules in a certain gas sample obey Newton’s laws of motion.
  • If a gas sample is left for a sufficient time, it eventually comes to a steady state. The density of molecules and the distribution of molecules are independent of position, distance and time.

Synthetic resins method is a method used for removing permanent hardness of water. In this method ion exchange resins (RSO3H) is changed to RNa by treating it with NaCl. Then, RNa exchanges Na+  ions with Ca2+  and Mg2+  ions present in hard water and as a result, hard water is softened.
2RNa (s) + Mg2+(aq) → R2M(s) + 2 Na+(aq)

Substances which can act both as acids, as well as bases, are called amphiprotic or amphoteric substances. When we look just at Bronsted-Lowry acids and bases we can also talk about amphiprotic substances which are a special type of amphoteric substances.

Ayushi Ayushi 6 years, 11 months ago

In chemistry, an amphoteric compound is a molecule or ion that can react both as an acid and as a base. Many metals (such as copper, zinc, tin, lead, aluminium, and beryllium) form amphoteric oxides or hydroxides. ...

Modern Periodic Law:  It states that "The physical and chemical properties of the elements are the periodic function of their atomic numbers."
According to this law, if we arrange the elements on basis of their increasing atomic numbers, we find that the elements with similar physical and chemical behavior will be grouped together after a certain interval of elements.
Here, the "periodic function" is used because the properties of elements are repeated after a periodic time (i.e. after a fix no. of elements) with atomic numbers.
