Under federalism, different states decide to come under a central authority and form a federation. Both the federal authority (which is also known as central authority) and the states operate in predecided areas as far as the making of enacting of laws is concerned. Areas like Defence and foreign affairs, Monetary control etc. remains under the jurisdiction of the central or Federal authority. There a list of common areas also exists, on which both the centre and the states can make laws, but when both the authorities make a law on any one subject/area, centre's law will prevail over the state's law. In India also, states have opted to come under a central authority. Hope, in the light of above you will easily understand that how is India a federal country.

We can not imagine a developed world without minerals. A very insignificant product that we use like a safety pin to some of the most sophisticated products like an ultra light weight metal for aircraft manufacture -all are because of mining of minerals. Almost the entire world uses fossil fuels (coal and petroleum) for our transportation, power and movement. Also our body requires certain essential minerals in very small quantities for its growth and development. Every part of our lives are invariably and unconsciously associated with minerals.

The British government constituted a Statutory Commission under Sir John Simon. The commission was made to look into the functioning of the constitutional system in India and suggest changes. But since all the members in the commission were British , the Indian leaders opposed the commission. The Simon Commission arrived in India in 1928. It was greeted with the slogan ‘Go back Simon'.

Social differences may originate because of the following reasons:

  • Most social differences are based on the accident of birth. For example, people may be tall, strong, weak, girl or boy.
  • Some social differences emerge because people choose to follow certain practices or principles. For example, a person may be an atheist or may be a feminist. Some people may convert to another religion.
  • At times, religion is also a cause of social division.
  • People can be also differentiated on the basis of caste or colour. For example, in India social divisions exist mainly becuase of caste system while in several countries, social divisions exist due to differences in colour.
