    • Narmada Bachao Andolan and the Tehri Dam Andolan, etc., were the movements to resist large-scale displacement of local communities. Local people often had to give up their land, livelihood and their control over resources for the greater good of the nation.
    • Irrigation has changed the cropping pattern from shifting to commercial crops. It is responsible for salinisation of the soil. At the same time, it has its social impact by increasing the social gap between the rich landowners and the landless poor.
    • Dams also created conflicts between people wanting different uses and benefits from the same water resource. In Gujarat, the Sabarmati basin farmers were agitated over the priority given to water supply in urban areas, particularly during droughts.
    • Interstate water disputes are also common with regard to sharing the costs and benefits of the multi-purpose projects. For e.g., Krishna-Godavari dispute, is due to the objections raised by Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh governments regarding the diversion of more water at Koyna by the Maharashtra government for a multi-purpose project.

    *In Awadh the non cooperation movement by Baba Ramchandra. *Baba Ramchandra was an indentured labour in Fiji but then became a sanyasi. *He lead the movement against talukdars and landlords who demanded exorbitantly high prices and other cesses(taxes) from small peasants. *Small peasants often have to do begar,worked as unpaid labourer. *The peasants demanded reduction of revenue,social boycott of oppressive landlordsand abolition of begar. *ln 1920 Jawaharlal Nehru toured the place and understood the problem. *By October Oudh kisan sabha was set up lead by Jawaharlal Nehru and Baba Ramchandra. *In a month 300 branches were set up. *But in 1921 congress become unhappy as houses of landlords were attacked,bazaars looted and grains were hoarded.

    Sri Lanka emerged as an independent country in 1948. The democratically elected government adopted a series of measures to establish Sinhala supremacy.

    1. In 1956, an Act was passed to make Sinhala as the official language.
    2. The government followed preferential policies favouring Sinhala applicants for University positions and government jobs.
    3. The constitution provided for State protection for Buddhism.

    The Sri Lankan Tamils felt that none of the major political parties led by the Buddhist Sinhala leaders were sensitive to their language and culture and denied them equal political rights which led to increased feeling of alienation among them.
