Corn laws were the laws which imposed restrictions and tariffs on the restricted grains and this was designed to favour domestic producers by keeping the high price in grain.
The British imposed this laws to impose restrictions on the import of corn into Britain.
Corn laws were abolished later because prices of food  items went up. People, urban dwellers and industrialists forced the government to abolish these laws.

The below mentioned steps should be taken to minimise environmental degradation by industry:
(i) Minimising use water for processing by reusing and recycling it in two or more successive stages.
(ii) Harvesting of rainwater to meet water requirements.
(iii) Treating hot water and effluents before releasing them in rivers and ponds.
(iv)Overdrawing of ground water reserves by industry where there is a threat to ground water resources also needs to be regulated legally.
(v) Particulate matter in the air can be reduced by fitting smoke stacks to factories with electrostatic precipitators, fabric filters, scrubbers and inertial separators. Smoke can be reduced by using oil or gas instead of coal in factories. Machinery and equipment can be used and generators should be fitted with silencers.

Importance of conservation of Minerals:

  • Mineral resources are being rapidly consumed which takes millions of years to be created and concentrated.
  • Mineral resources are finite and non-renewable
  • Continued extraction of ores leads to increasing costs as mineral extraction comes from greater depths along with decreasing quality.

The three measures to conserve minerals are:

  • It should be used in a planned a sustainable manner.
  • Improved technology needs to be constantly evolved to allow use of low grade ores at low costs.
  • Some of the metals are recyclables.
  • Scrap of metal can be used and sore other substitute can be found.

Setting up industries in large area known as industrialisation

(i) As the Swadeshi Movement gathered momentum in India, the nationalists mobilised people to boycott foreign cloth and other goods. Industrial groups organised themselves to protect their collective interests pressurising the government to increase tariff protection and grant other concessions.
(ii) From 1906, export of Indianyarn to China declined. So Indian industrialists shifted their interest from yarn to cloth production leading to considerable production of cotton piece goods.
(iii) The beginning of First World War created a new situation. Since British mills were busy in producing war materials to meet their own war needs, export of goods to India declined. This gave an opportunity to Indian industries to thrive. Indian mills now had a vast home market to supply.
(iv) As the war continued, Indian factories were called upon to supply war needs, such as jute bags, cloth for army uniform, tents, leather boots, horse and mule saddles, etc. New factories were set up and old factories ran double shift.
(v) After the war, industries in Britain got a severe setback. In India however local industrialists gradually consolidated their position substituting foreign manufactures and capturing home market. Handicraft production also expanded in the 20th century.

Vellum is a parchment made of animal skin. Luxury editions were still handwritten on very expensive vellum, meant for aristocratic circles and rich monastic libraries which scoffed at printed books as cheap vulgarities. Merchants and students in the university towns bought the cheaper printed copies.

Communalism can take several forms in politics – in everyday beliefs, formation of parties based on communities, campaigning or asking for votes, formation of government, etc.
(i) Communalism in daily beliefs : The most common expression of communalism is in everyday life. These routinely involve religious prejudices, stereotypes of religious communities and the beliefs in the superiority of one religion over the other religions. This is so common that we often fail to notice it, even when we believe in it.
(ii) Formation of political parties on the basis of communities : All the communities of the world have a quest for political dominance of one’s own religious community. For those belonging to the majority community, this takes the form of majoritarian dominance. For those belonging to the minority community, it can take the form of a desire to form a separate political unit.
(iii) Political mobilisation on communal lines : It is another frequent form of communalism. Parties based on a particular community make use of sacred symbols, religious leaders, emotional appeal and create fear in order to bring the followers of one religion together in the political arena. In electoral politics, this often involves a special appeal to the interests or emotions of voters of one religion in preference to others.
(iv) Communal riots: Sometimes, communalism takes the most ugly form of communal violence, riots and massacre. India has suffered some of the worst communal riots at the time of partition. The post independence period has also seen large- scale communal violence.

In modern democracies, power sharing can take the following forms:
1. Organs of Government: In democracy, power shared among Legislature, Executive and Juduciary. This is known as distribution of power, it allows different organs of government placed at the same level to excercise different powers. No organ can excercise unlimited power as each organ checks the others.
2. Governments at different levels: In federal form of government, power is shared between the central and state governments. In India there is another lower level of government -local self government. This is called vertical division of government.
3. Social Groups:  Power may also be shared among different social groups such as religious and linguistic groups. In iIndia there are constitutional and legal arrangements whereby socially weaker sections and women are represented in the legislatures and administration.

Bubonic disease or plague is also called as Black Death. It is a zoonotic disease means caused by the animals, circulating mainly in fleas on small rodents. The bacteria that is responsible for this disease is Yersinia pestis. This disease occurs by the biting of infected rodents. Example: Rat.
Upon a rat bite on a person's leg or arm leads to swell up into a painful bulging welt. If left untreated, symptoms, such as vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, can progress rapidly to septicemic plague. More painful welts would appear all over the person's body until the infection was so bad that the person died usually within three days.
