- On 13th April 1919, the infamous Jallianwala Bagh incident took place.
- On that day, a crowd of villagers who had come to Amritsar to attend a fair gathered in the enclosed ground of Jallianwala Bagh.
- Being from outside the city, they were unaware of the martial law that had been imposed.
- General Dyer entered the area, blocked the only exit point, and opened fire on the crowd, killing and wounding hundreds of people.
- His objective was to ‘produce a moral effect’ to create in the minds of satyagrahis, a feeling of terror and awe.
- As the news spread, crowds took to the streets. There were strikes, clashes with police and attacks on government buildings. The government responded with brutal repression. Seeing violence spread, Mahatma Gandhi called off the movement.

The pre-modern world shrank greatly in the 16th century.
Because the European sailors found a sea route to Asia and successfully crossed the western ocean to America.
The Portuguese and the Spanish conquests and colonialisation of America was decisively under way by the mid-16th century.
Precious metals, particularly silver, from mines located in presently Peru and Mexico enhanced Europe’s wealth and financed its trade with Asia.

Religion played an important role in the strengthening of colonial rule and development of aniticolonial feeling and uniting vietnamese against colonial control.
Vietnam's religious beliefs were a mixure of Buddhism, Confucianism and local practices.
Religion formed an integral part of the social and cultural life of the Vietnamese people.
Introducing Christianity was intolerant of the easy going attitude and Vietnamese reverence of the supernatural. Through Christianity the French tried to exercise control over the religious life of the Vietnamese.
This brought the Vietnamese into conflict with the French. Though the French were succesful in crushing the Scholars Revolt, the Hoa Hao Movement became popular. Through this movement Huynh Phu So tried to address many social evils but the French declared him madand exiled him to Laos.
Though the popular struggles put down by the French they served as inspiration for the patriots.

(d)Mode of transport have contributed to its socio-economic progress in many ways

Gaurav Seth 6 years, 8 months ago
(i) Fast and efficiendy moving transport is required for traded items to reach their destinations on time, otherwise business will suffer.
(ii) Communications are vital for international trade where much advance planning is required for success! If a communication fails, it can create heavy losses in trade.
(iii) Transport is required to carry raw materials to production centres and from manufacturing hubs to markets particularly for perishable goods.
(iv) Modern communication facilities like the internet allow commercial transactions to take place over large distances including overseas transaction. They also keep buyers and sellers informed about their present and prospective markets.
Thus, it can be concluded that dense and efficient network of transport is a pre-requisite for national and international trade.
