The colonial European powers met in Berlin in 1884-85 where they negotiated and formalized claims to territory in Africa. Or simply we can say to distribute African colonies among themselves (European colonial powers).
As the European colonial powers began to colonize the Africa in order to feed their industries with abundant natural resources of Africa, there began clashes between.The rivalry between British and France lead Bismark to intervene and he called the meeting in Berlin where the colonial powers negotiated claims of territory in Africa which were accordingly mapped and formalize.

Continuous use of land over a long period of time without taking appropriate measures to conserve and manage it, has resulted in land degradation.
India’s degraded land:
At present there is about 130 million hectares of degraded land in India. Approximately, 28 per cent of it belongs to the category of forest degraded area. 56 per cent of it is water eroded area. The rest is affected by saline and alkaline deposits. Some human activities such as deforestation, overgrazing, mining and quarrying too have contributed significantly to land degradation.

Merits of globalisation
- Increased free trade between nations
- Increased liquidity of capital allowing investors in developed nations to invest in developing nations
- Corporations have greater flexibility to operate across borders
- Global mass media ties the world together.
- Increased flow of communications allows vital information to be shared between individuals and corporations around the world.
Demerits of globalisation
(i) For a large number of small producers, globalisation has posed major problems. These producers were not able to free the competition from large foreign producers and hence several of such production units had to shut down, rendering workers jobless.
(ii) Workers in MNCs are employed on* temporary basis . and laid off without any compensation during the slack period.

1)The ideology of liberalism was an important factor which promoted the sense of nationalism ,the nation-state. The term , liberalism has been derived from the latin word liber emaning free . Different people interpreted the meaning of liberalism differently in their own ways.
2) For the new middle classes liberalism stood for the freedom of the individual and equality of all before law.
3) Politically, it meant the concept of government by consent.
4) For some, it meant having the right of private property.

- After the failure of First Round Table Conference efforts were made by the Government to make an agreement that the congress would attend the next Round Table Conference.
- The Viceroy, Lord Irwin, was authorised to hold talks with Mahatma Gandhi. Finally, Gandhi and Irwin made an agreement on 5 March 1931.
- The agreement is called Gandhi-Irwin pact
- By this pact Government agreed to release most of the civil disobedience volunteers, against whom there was no allegation of violence.
- The Congress suspended the Civil Disobedience Movement and agreed to participate in the second Round Table Conference.
