(i) Impact on trade : The depression immediately affected Indian trade. India’s exports and imports nearly halved between 1928 and 1934. As international prices crashed, prices in India plunged. Between 1928 and 1934 wheat prices in India fell by about 50 per cent.
(if) Impact on farmers : The fall in prices had a deep impact on the poor farmers. Though agricultural prices fell sharply, but the colonial government refused to give any relief to the farmers in taxes. Peasants producing tor the world market were the worst hit.
(iii) Impact on Urban India : The depression proved less grim for urban India. Because of falling prices those with fixed income- say town-dwelling landowners, who received rents and middle-class salaried employees now found themselves better off. Every thing low cost.
(iv) High Industrial investment : Industrial investment also grew as the government extended tariff protection to industries, under the pressure of nationalist opinion.
(v) Political Impact : The Great Depression paved way for Gandhiji to launch the Civil Disobedience movement.

  • After Independence, the Indian government had put barriers on foreign trade and foreign investment.
  • Initially, Indian industries were just coming up after Independence, so competition from imports wouldn’t have allowed these industries to come up.
  • In 1999, the government decided that the time had come for Indian producers to compete with the producers around the globe.
  • It was felt that competition would improve the performance of domestic producers since they would improve their quality.
  • Thus, barriers on foreign trade and foreign investment were removed to a large extent.
  • Now, goods could be imported and exported easily and foreign companies could also set up
    factories and offices here.

The principle of the Garden City was developed by architect and planner Ebenezer Howard to solve the problem of the growing congestion and pollution of the city of London. The Garden City was a pleasant space full of plants and trees, where people would both work and live.
He believed that not only it would bridge the difference between the city and the countryside and solve the housing problem of the poor, but it would also produce better quality citizens.

  • Credit plays a crucial role in a country’s development. By sanctioning loans to developing industries and trade, banks provide them with the necessary aid for improvement.
  • This leads to increase in the production, profits and employment. However, caution must be exercised in the case of loans from the informal sector which include high interest rates that may be more harmful than good.
  • For this reason, it is important that the formal sector gives out more loans so that borrowers are not duped by moneylenders, and can ultimately contribute to national development.
  • For example- a loan given to a fresh post-graduate for setting up a business might contribute to employment generation, infrastructure development in the near future.

Banks play an important role in the economy:
1. They only keep about 15% of the deposits as cash. The rest is used to give loans to various people.
 2. Loans are required for various economic activities as well as investments, Banks mediate between people having surplus cash and those in need of it.
3. They give interest to the depositors and they charge interest on those taking loans from the banks. The difference between the interest rates is the main income of the bank.
4. Banks encourage depositing money by giving an interest This contributes to savings in the economy.
5. By providing credit at reasonable interest rates, they encourage investment and prevent exploitation from the informal sector.
