The different forms of power sharing in modern democracies are: → Horizontal Distribution of Power: The power is shared among the different organs of government, such as the legislature, executive and judiciary. Example: The distribution of power between Indian Parliament (legislature), the council of ministers headed by chief ministers (executive) and Courts of India. → Vertical Distribution of Power: The power is shared among governments at different levels– a general government for the entire country and governments at the provincial or regional level. Example: In India, power is shared among Central government, State government and local governments. → Distribution of Power among different Social Groups: Power may also be shared among different social groups such as the religious and linguistic groups.Example: ‘Community Government’ in Belgium. → Distribution of Power among Political Parties, Pressure Groups and Movements: Political Parties, Pressure Groups and Movements control or influence those who are in power. Different political parties contest elections for power which ensures that power does not remain in one hand and shared among different political parties that represent different ideologies and social groups. Pressure groups and movements influence the decision making process. Thank you??

The Frankfurt Parliament, which was convented in 1848, was the first major step taken towards the unification of German states. But this liberal initiative of nation building was repressed by the combined forces of the Monarchy and big landlords of Prussia. From then Prussia took the Initiative to unify Germany. Otto Von Bismarck, the Chief Minister of Prussia, carried out the process of unification with the help of the Prussian army and bureaucracy. Bismarck was convinced that the unification of Germany could be only achieved by the princes, not by the people. He wanted to achieve his aim by merging Prussia into Germany. In 1867, Bismarck became the chancellor of the North confederation. Bismarck’s main objective was to unify Germany and was accomplished by three wars which were fought in a brief period of seven years. These wars were ended with the victory of Prussia which helped in completing the process of German unification on 18th January, 1871, in the Royal Palace of Versalles, the king of Prussia was crowned as the German Emperor. It symbolized the birth of a united Germany. Thank you???

  • When a particular caste tries to gain prominence by adding many neighbouring castes and sub-castes which were earlier not included.
  • The caste system also becomes politicised when caste groups are required to enter into a coalition with other castes. In such a case, every caste tries to gain maximum benefits for itself.
  • Of late, many caste groups have gained entry into politics by terming themselves as ‘backward’ or ‘forward’ caste groups.

It is to be noticed that the existence of the caste system is itself not healthy for any democracy. It mostly produces negative results. In India, it has resulted in the vicious circle of poverty, unemployment and illiteracy for many castes. The caste system may also lead to caste division, caste violence and conflicts resulting in violence.

However, we also need to keep in mind that the caste system always does not play a role in shaping politics or deciding the candidates from a constituency. This is due to the following reasons:

  • Not every constituency in the country has a clear majority of one single caste. Therefore, every party is required to win the trust of the people belonging to different castes.
  • No political party wins all the votes of a particular favoured caste or community. When people say that caste is a ‘vote bank’, they simply mean that many people from that one particular caste may vote for the party.
  • Because several political parties fight elections, there may be many candidates from the same caste fighting elections against each other.
  • It has been seen that many elected MPs or MLAs may lose the elections. If candidates are elected on caste lines, then no candidate can ever lose the elections.

Non-cooperation Civil-Disobedience
It was launched on September 5th, 1920 and it ended on 5th February 1922 It began on March 12, 1930, through the launch of the Salt Satyagraha
The Non-Cooperation Movement sought to bring the working of the government to a standstill by not cooperating with the administration. The Civil Disobedience Movement was an attempt at paralysing the administration by breaking some specific rules and regulations.
There was large scale participation of Muslim working class in the Non-Cooperation movement The Civil-Disobedience movement saw less participation from the Muslim community due to the policy of divide and rule by the British and the communal propaganda of the Muslim League and the Hindu Mahasabha
The non-cooperation movement was geographically confined to certain parts of India The civil disobedience movement saw widespread geographical coverage and mass participation in comparison to the non-cooperation movement
The movement was called off in 1922 due to the Chauri-Chaura incident (Occurred on Feb 5th, 1922) The movement was withdrawn after the signing of the Gandhi-Irwin pact

Roof top water harvesting is important because:

(i) It was commonly practised to store drinking water.

(ii) The rainwater can be stored in the tanks till the next rainfall, making it an extremely reliable source of drinking water when all other sources are dried up, particularly in the summers.

(iii) Rain water, or palar pani, as commonly referred to in these parts, is considered the purest form of natural water.

(iv) Many houses construct underground rooms adjoining the 'tanka' to beat the summer heat as it would keep the room cool.

(v) Some houses still maintain the tanks since they do not like the taste of tap water.

Because those area face water too many shortages .

The number of consumer groups and their activities has increased. Currently about 700 consumer groups work in the country but only 20-25 groups have been recognized by the government. The existing laws are not effective as far as compensation for defective products goes. The redressal process is still expensive and time-consuming.
Even after more than 25 years of enactment of Consumer Protection Act (COPRA), a large section of consumers are unaware of their rights. Often rules and regulations applicable to marketplace are not followed. It is necessary that people should be made aware of their rights and role. Only then the consumer movement can be effective.

  • After Independence, the Indian government had put barriers on foreign trade and foreign investment.
  • Initially, Indian industries were just coming up after Independence, so competition from imports wouldn’t have allowed these industries to come up.
  • In 1999, the government decided that the time had come for Indian producers to compete with the producers around the globe.
  • It was felt that competition would improve the performance of domestic producers since they would improve their quality.
  • Thus, barriers on foreign trade and foreign investment were removed to a large extent.
  • Now, goods could be imported and exported easily and foreign companies could also set up
    factories and offices here.
