Printing in the 19th century : This new reading culture was accompanied by a new technology. Western printing techniques and mechanical presses were imported in the fate nineteenth century as Western powers established their outposts in China. Shanghai became the hub of the new print culture, catering to the Western-style schools. From hand printing there was now a gradual shift to mechanical printing.

- The new style didn't entirely displace the existing art of producing books by hand.
- Because in past, the print technology was expensive. So writers could not afford it. Handwritten books were still appreciable and had a craze among people.
- Borders were illuminated by hand with foliage(leaf-like designs) and other patterns and illustrations were painted. The metal letters imitated the ornamental handwritten styles.

(i) This allows various disadvantaged and marginal social groups to express their grievances, and get the government to attend to these.
(ii) Expression of various kinds of social divisions in politics often results in their cancelling one another out, and thus, reduces their intensity. This leads to the strengthening of a democracy
(iii) In certain case, countries like India tries to accomodate social division by providing political power to certain backward people.

| Ovelapping | Cross-cutting |
| When some social difference causes and overlaps with other difference. | If social differences cross-cut one another, then one social difference is compromised with the other |
| overlapping differences is the mixture of one or more differences caused by one main difference | It means that a group that share a common interest on the issue are likely to be on different sides on a different issue. |
| Example- racial difference between dark complexion and fairer complexion also refered as the afro-americans in the US becomes a social division because the darker complexion tend to stay unemployed due to their colour and tend to be poor & homeless, and often face injustice & discrimination. | Example -Northern Ireland & Netherlands both are predominantly Christians but divided between Catholics & Protestants. In Northern Ireland the Protestants have stayed richer than the Catholics here class & religion overlap each other, Catholics have been poor & have suffered discrimination |

Multipurpose projects lead to land degradation because :
(i) Irrigation has changed the cropping pattern of many regions with farmers shifting to water intensive crops. This has led to the salinisation of the soil.
(ii) Regulating and damming of rivers affect the natural flow of rivers causing poor sediment flow.
(iii) The flood plains are deprived of silt.
(iv) Multipurpose projects induce pollution which leads to land degradation.

Erasmus was the latin scholar, was not happy with printing of books because he was afraid that this would lead to circulation of books with rebellious ideas. He felt that although a few books may give useful information, the majority of books may be just useless or give stupid, scandalous of irreligious ideas which may lead to incitement of rebellion.

Political leader differed sharply over the question of separate electorates because
(i) The Nationalist Congress Leaders saw in the Movement the seeds of ‘Divide and Rule’, which weaken the National Movement. This policy of the British would benefit them to maintain their rule over India as long as they wished.
(ii) The Muslim leaders pretended that their interest could only be protected in a Muslim State, and in a Hindu majority state they would be at the mercy of the Hindus.
(iii) BR Ambedkar, the leader of the depressed classes, was in favour of separate electorates, because he feared that in a combined electorate, the lower castes would be under the dominance of the upper castes. Gandhiji brought him round to his views by a tactful move by signing a ‘Poona Pact’ with him which provided fixed and reserved seats for the depressed classes.

In igneous and metamorphic rocks, minerals occur in cracks, crevices, faults and joints. They are formed when minerals in liquid or molten and gaseous forms are forced upward through these weak zones (cavities) towards earth’s surface. They cool and solidify as they rise towards the surface. Tin, copper, zinc, lead and diamond etc. are various minerals found in igneous and metamorphic rocks.

ndian government has put barriers to foreign trade and foreign investments after independence because:
- It wanted to protect the producer within the country from foreign competition.
- As the industries were just coming up in 1950’s and 1960’s the competition from inputs at that stage would not have allowed these industries to come up.
- Indian allowed imports of only essential items such as machinery fertilizers, petroleum, etc.

Social differences are the situations where people are discriminated against on the basis of social, economic, and racial inequality.
On the other hand, social division means division of society on the basis of social differences like language, region, caste, colour, race and ***.
Social differences can be easily accommodated with some reservation policies.
But social division sometimes lead to political division of the country.
