A self-help group (SHG) is a village-based financial intermediary committee usually composed of 10–20 local women or men. A mixed group is generally not preferred. Most self-help groups are located in India, though SHGs can be found in other countries, especially in South Asia and Southeast Asia.

➡️The Non-Cooperation movement was launched by Gandhi on 1st August 1920 while the Civil Disobedience movement was launched by Gandhi on 6th April 1930 at Dandi in Gujarat. Thus there was a gap of 10 years between the two movements. ➡️The Civil Disobedience movement was centred around the defiance of salt laws throughout the country which became the symbol of the movement. The Non-Cooperation movement did not have any such single defining symbol around which the entire movement was centred. ➡️The goal of the Non-Cooperation movement was Swaraj or self-rule by demanding the status of dominion status from the British government. While the goal of the Civil Disobedience movement had moved further; from Swaraj to complete independence from foreign rule.

If social differences in a society overlap with each other it may lead to social division and if one social difference is given preference then people would begin to think that they belong to different community. For example, dalits in India are poor, landless and also victims of caste system.

ii. Social divisions are also the result of increased migration of people we may give example of Germany and Sweden which were once homogeneous societies, however due to increased migration of people there is a change in their social demography.

iii. Social divisions are also the result of economic factors which may divide the society between the haves and haves not, creating disparities between the rich and the poor. Such a kind of division is the result of unequal distribution of resources.

  • Most social differences are based on the accident of birth. For example, people may be tall, strong, weak, girl or boy.
  • Some social differences emerge because people choose to follow certain practices or principles. For example, a person may be an atheist or may be a feminist. Some people may convert to another religion.
  • At times, religion is also a cause of social division.
  • People can be also differentiated on the basis of caste or colour. For example, in India social divisions exist mainly becuase of caste system while in several countries, social divisions exist due to differences in colour.

National Resources are the resources which belong to the people of a nation . The country has legal powers to acquire even private property for public good. For example, Urban development authorities. All the minerals, water, forests, wildlife, land within the political boundaries and oceanic area upto 12 nautical miles from the coast termed as territorial water belong to the nation.
International resources are the resources which are regulated by some international institutions. The oceanic resources beyond 200 nautical miles of the exclusive economic zone belong to the open oceans and no individual country can utilise these resources without the consent of international institutions e.g. India has the right to use the manganese nodules from the bed of the Indian ocean which lie beyond the exclusive economic zone.

Some broad guidelines that can be kept in mind while devising ways and means for political reforms in India are:

1. Legal ways of reforming politics: Carefully devised changes in laws can help to discourage wrong political practices and encourage good ones. But, legal-constitutional changes by themselves cannot overcome challenges to the democracy. Democratic reforms are to be carried out mainly by the political activists, parties, movements and politically conscious citizens.

2. Careful study of consequences should be done: If there is any legal change,it must carefully look at what results it will have on politics. Sometimes the results may be counter-productive. For example, many states have banned people from contesting Panchayat elections who have more than two children. This has resulted in denial of political opportunity to many poor and women, which was not intended.
3. Ways to strengthen the democratic practice: Democratic reforms are to be brought about principally through political practice. Therefore, the main focus of the reforms should be on ways to strengthen the democratic practice. The most important concern should be to increase and improve the quality of political participation by ordinary citizens.

4. Any proposal of political reform should think not only about what is a good solution but also consider about who will implement it and how. It is not wise to think that legislatures will pass legislations that will go against the interest of all political parties and MPs. But, measures that rely on democratic movements, citizens, organisations and the media are likely to succeed.

(i) Primary education became compulsory from the late nineteenth century, children became an important category of readers. Production of school textbooks became critical for the publishing industry.

(ii) A children's press devoted to literature for children alone, was set up in France in 1857.

(iii) This press published new works as well as old fairy tales and folk tales.

(iv) The Grimm brothers in Germany spent years in compiling traditional folk tales gathered from peasants. What they collected was edited before the stories were published in a collection in 1812.

(v) Anything that was considered unsuitable for children or would appear vulgar to the elites, was not included in the published version. Rural folk tales thus acquired i new form. In this way, print recorded old tales but also changed them.
