- Political Fragmentation of Italy Italy had a long history of political fragmentation. Italy was divided into seven states during the middle of the nineteenth century.
- Of these seven states only Sardinia-Piedmont was ruled by an Italian princely house. At that time North of Italy was under Austrian Habsburg, the centre was ruled by Pope and the Southern regions were ruled by the Bourbon kings of Spain.
- Role of Mazzini:
- During 1830s, Giuseppe Mazzini had tried to unite Italy. He formed the secret society called young Italy.
- But both the uprising in 1831 and 1848 failed. Even the ruling elites also wanted a unified Italy which would offer economic development and political dominance.
- Role of Cavour:
- The unification of Italy was a result of many wars. Chief Minister Cavour made a tactful diplomatic alliance with France, and Sardinia-Piedmont succeeded in defeating the Austrian forces in 1859.
- Role of Garibaldi:
- A large number of armed volunteers under the leadership of Giuseppe Garibaldi joined the unification movement.
- In 1860, they marched into South Italy and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies succeeded to drive out the Spanish rulers with the help of local people. In 1861, Victor Emmanuel II was proclaimed as king of United Italy.

सत्याग्रह का अर्थ: महात्मा गांधी ने सत्याग्रह के रूप में जनांदोलन का एक नायाब तरीका अपनाया। यह तरीका इस सिद्धांत पर आधारित था कि यदि कोई सही मकसद के लिए लड़ रहा हो तो उसे अपने ऊपर अत्याचार करने वाले से लड़ने के लिए ताकत की जरूरत नहीं होती है। गांधीजी का विश्वास था कि एक सत्याग्रही अहिंसा के द्वारा ही अपनी लड़ाई जीत सकता है।
गाँधीजी द्वारा आयोजित शुरु के कुछ सत्याग्रह आंदोलन:
- 1916 में चंपारण में किसान आंदोलन।
- 1917 में खेड़ा का किसान आंदोलन।
- 1918 में अहमदाबाद के मिल मजदूरों का आंदोलन।

Bombay is known as a 'mayapuri', a 'City of Dreams' for the following reasons:
- Despite its overcrowding and lack of sanitation facilities, a continulous stream of migrants pours in the city of Mumbai, i.e., erstwhile Bombay. This so since Bombay has historically provided ample eocnomic opprtunities for those seeking to find employment.
- Also, Bombay has historically been the centre of the Hindi film industry. This has given the city a sort of glamour.
- The many migrants who travelled from cities like Lahore, Calcutta, Madras portrayed Bombay as a city that gave everyone the opprtunity to realise their dreams.
- The cumulative effect of these factors was that the image of Bombay got germinated as the city of dream and reality, of slums and star bunglows.

The Congress under Gandhiji believed in achieving ‘Swaraj’ by peaceful means and total non-violence.The peasants and workers, though believers in Gandhi’s Swaraj, khadi and boycott, did not believe in non-violence. They turned violent to gain their aims, which went against the Congress creed.

Features of handwritten manuscripts Before the age of print everything had to be written by hand.
(i) handwritten manuscripts were expensive and it was a laborious and time consuming business.
(ii) Skilled hand writers could not meet the everincreasing demand for books.
(iii) As initially paper was not available, bark of trees, palm leaves, vellum etc. were used to write manuscripts.

Political Parties are the organized group of people whose main aim is to contest elections,come to power and retain power. It is said that parties reflect social and political divisions in the society through the following ways:
a. Parties divide the society on the basis of ideologies that its supports and endorses.
b. Parties involve partisanship where people show affiliation to a particular party and its ideology.
c. A party seeks to promote and upholds a particular interest. For example regional parties, caste based parties.
d. A party comprises of a leader who is actively propagating his/her party's programme
e. Parties tend to divide people for instance , caste based parties creates division in terms of pro reservation and anti reservation group.
f. Then there are regional based parties which may at times demand greater autonomy or even secessionism from the Union,laeding to balkanisation of the country.

The reinterpretation of history helped in to look into the past with a sense of pride and achievements. They wrote about glorious developments in ancient times when art and architecture , science and mathematics, religion and culture, law and philosophy, crafts and trade had flourished. It was opposite to what the British had manifested the Indian to be in the eyes of the world.
