The term ‘Industrial Revolution’ stands for those developments and inventions which revolutionised the technique and organisation of production in the later half of the 18 th century. This Industrial Revolution replaced the previous domestic system of production by the new factory system. In place of manual and animal power, new machines and steam power were used for producing things. This revolution replaced cottage industries by factories, hand labour by machine work and craftsmen and artists by capitalists and factory owners.

(1) Earlier, reading was restricted to the elites.
(2) With the printing press, books could reach out to wider sections of society. If earlier, there was a hearing public, now a reading public came into being.
(3) Publishers had to keep in mind the wider reach of the printed books. Even those who did not read, could enjoy listening to the books being read out.
(4) So, printers began publishing popular ballads and folk tales and such books would be profusely illustrated with pictures.
(5) These were then sung and recited at gatherings in villages and in taverns in towns.

The main reasons favoring shift from hand printing to mechanical printing in China are the following:
1. The imperial state of China had the bureaucracy. Since the selection of the officials was based on the competitive exams, the state published books for such exams. Over a course of time, the number of applicants increased, and hand printing could not serve the increasing demand for copies.
2. Printing in the 17th century China was no longer limited to the scholar or the officials, but it was also used by merchants, to print their daily entries.
3. Besides, reading during this time grew a leisure activity. Almost all the sections of the society began reading poetries, autobiographies, romantic plays etc.
4. This new reading culture was followed by a modern technology. In the late 19th century, Western publication methods and mechanical presses were introduced in China as a result of the establishment of Western powers outposts in China.
5. Thereon, Shanghai became the hub of the new print culture, provisioning to the western school. A gradual shift could now be seen in the method of printing (from hand printing to machine printing).

In Belgium, leaders recognised the existence of regional differences and cultural diversities. The Belgian government accommodated its diverse ethnic population in the following manner:
- Constitution says that the number of Dutch and French speaking ministers shall be equal in the Central government. Thus, no single community can make decisions unilaterally.
- Many powers of the Central Government have been given to the state governments, of the two regions of the country. The state governments are not subordinate to the Central government.
- Brussels has a separate government in which both the communities have equal representation.
- There is a third kind of government, called the ‘community government’. This government is elected by the people belonging to one language community—Dutch, French and German speaking, no matter where they live. This government has the power regarding cultural education and language related issues.
These arrangements helped to avoid a civic strife between the two major communities and a possible division of the country on linguistic lines.

When the Belgian leaders recognized the existence of regional differences and cultural diversities, they amended their constitution four times in order to accommodate these differences.
The following are the ways in which Belgium has accommodated the existing regional differences and cultural diversities.
- Equal number of ministers: The Government of Belgium has equal number of Dutch- and French-speaking ministers. This has been done to give equal power to the majority and the minority language speaking groups.
- Setting up of Community Government: A third kind of government, named the community government, is introduced in addition to the Central and the State Government. This government has the power regarding cultural, educational and lingual issues. This government comprises members from all the three communities—Dutch-speaking, French-speaking and German-speaking.
- Fair share of power: Many powers of the Central government have been given to the state governments of the two regions of the country. The state governments are not subordinate to the Central government but are independent.

Unification of Germany took place in 1871. The unification process was led by Bismarck, Chancellor of Prussia, which was the largest German kingdom. Through a series of victorious wars against Austria and France, which were blocking German unification, Bismarck succeeded in unifying Germany under the Prussian king.
Unification of Italy took place in 1871. This process was under the leadership of the King and Chancellor of Piedmont--Sardinia. The unification process was also marked by wars against Austria. Unification was complete when the Pope lost power over Rome and the Papal states.
Unification of Britian took place in 1707 when the kingdoms of England and Scotland formed an union. These kingdoms were earlier separate although they were ruled by the same monarch from London. With the 1707 alliance, Britain became a united political system.

Most social differences are based on the accident of birth. For example, people may be tall, strong, weak, girl or boy.
Some social differences emerge because people choose to follow certain practices or principles. For example, a person may be an atheist or may be a feminist. Some people may convert to another religion.
All social differences do not result in social divisions. Sometimes, even people belonging to different religions may have common interests.

- Banks are not present everywhere in rural India.
- Even if they are present, getting a loan from a bank is much more difficult than taking a loan
from informal sources. - Bank loans require proper documents and a collateral. Absence of collateral is one of the major reasons which prevents the poor from getting bank loans.
- Informal lenders like moneylenders know the borrower personally and hence, are often willing to give a loan without a collateral.
- The borrowers can, if necessary, approach the moneylender even without repaying their earlier loans.
- However, the moneylenders charge very high rates of interest, keep no records of the transactions and harass the poor borrowers.

The Reserve Bank of India supervises the functioning of formal sources of loans. It does that in the following ways:
•The RBI monitors that the banks actually maintain a minimum cash balance out of the deposits they receive.
•RBI ensures that the banks give loans not just to profit making business and traders but also to small cultivators, small scale industries, small borrowers etc.
•Periodically banks have to submit information to the RBI on how much they are lending to whom at what interest rates.
•RBI can pull up any banks if it is flouting the norms and regulations related to lending of loans.
