Satyagraha according to Gandhi was a unique weapon to fight injustice. It was a novel method of mass agitation. It stressed on the principle of truth, non-violence, tolerance and peaceful protests. Mahatma Gandhi had successfully launched the mass struggle movement against the racial policies of the government in South Africa. In this struggle, he had used the method of peaceful mass agitation. Gandhi called this as ‘Satyagraha’. According to him, it was a novel method which stressed on truth and non-violence. He believed that if we are fighting for a true and a common cause, then truth will undoubtedly win. This movement proved successful in South Africa. Hence, he also decided to wage a war based on the idea of Satyagraha against the colonist regime of the British Empire in India. He contended that Satyagraha would unite all the Indians. To him, “if all the Indians unite and participate in this struggle of truth and non-violence then they are bound to overthrow the British rule”. This novel idea of Satyagraha was adopted by the people all across the country under the dynamic leadership of Gandhi. In Non-Cooperation, Civil Disobedience and Quit India movements, people defied the government, left government schools and offices and peacefully protested against the government. The brutal suppression of the peaceful protestors by the British government drew criticisms from every nook and corners of the world. The participation of people in large numbers forced the government to finally quit India in 1947. Satyagraha according to Gandhi was a unique weapon to fight injustice. Introduction of western education was another important factor which paved the way for the growth of nationalism. Three main agencies were responsible for the spread of modem education in India. They were the foreign Christian missionaries, the British Government and the progressive Indians.

Following are the factors responsible for the rise of nationalism in India:
1. Anti-colonial movement: in the struggle against the colonial government people began to discover a sense of their own identity of belonging to one nation.
2. The image of Bharat Mata the national song Vande Mataram and the National Anthem were some of the factors that developed the sense of unity and oneness among people and encouraged people to fight against foreign rule.
3. The folklore played an important role in binding all the communities together against the Western forces that damaged the traditional Indian culture.
4. The cruel policies of the British government including the Salt Act, Rowlett Act, Jallianwala Bagh Massacre etc., made the Indians fight unitedly against their common enemy.
5. Congress made attempts to unite all the sections of the society and fight against the colonial rule.
All these attempts led Indians to launch a common struggle against the Colonial rule.

The Great Depression affected the Indian trade in many ways:
- The depression immediately affected Indian trade. India’s exports and imports nearly halved between 1928 and 1934. As international prices crashed, prices in India plunged. Between 1928 and 1934 wheat prices in India fell by about 50 percent.
- Peasants and farmers suffered more than urban dwellers. Though agricultural prices fell sharply, the colonial government refused to give any relief to the farmers in taxes. Peasants producing for the world market were the worst hit.
- Town-dwelling landowners and middle-class salaried employees found themselves better off as everything costs less.

Early traces of trade in India can be found in Harappan civilization. Business was the mover during the Indus civilization. The people dealt in stone bones etc. But for the kind of goods, they made, raw material was not abundantly available in the adjoining areas. The people carried their goods and probably grains too in boat and bullock cart in neighboring areas and exchanged these for metal. As per Mesopotamian documentation of around 2356 B.C., there was some trade with Meluha. This was the name of the Indus Valley. The Harappan people had commercial relations in Rajasthan with Afghanistan and Iran. They had established a market in northern Afghanistan

Britishers were keen on establishing a monopoly in India. They saw India as a means to drive their home country towards a state of unmatched power. Colonisers drew out every ounce of Indian resource and every drop of Indian blood for their selfish motives. Such was the state of exploitation.
During the British rule also the Indian economy remained agrarian. Rough estimates claim that about 85% of the economy derived their livelihood directly or indirectly from agriculture. Though, unlike the pre-colonial India, the feature of self-sufficiency vanished in the colonial state. This led to various famines which the colonizers paid no heed to provided it didn’t affect their profit margins. Effectively, the agricultural sector continued to experience deterioration and stagnation, particularly marked by low levels of agricultural productivity.

The limits of Civil Disobedience Movement were:
- The Congress ignored the dalits for fear of offending the sanatanis, the conservative high-caste Hindus. Also, Mahatma Gandhi called the untouchables the children of God.
- Dr B.R. Ambedkar, who organised the dalits into the Depressed Classes Association in 1930, clashed with Mahatma Gandhi at the second Roun
- d Table Conference by demanding separate electorates for dalits.
- This made the dalit apprehensive regarding the Congress led national movement.
- Decline of the Non-Cooperation-Khilafat movement, made a large section of Muslim feel alienated from the Congress. Thus, the response of Muslim political organisations in India was lukewarm.
- However, Muhammad Jinnah, one of the leaders of the Muslim League, was willing to give up the demand for separate electorates, if Muslims were assured reserved seats in the Central Assembly and representation in proportion to population in the Muslim-dominated provinces (Bengal and Punjab).
- Hence, the start of Civil Disobedience Movement created an atmosphere of suspicion and distrust between communities.
