The earlier phase of industrialisation in which large scale production was carried out for international market not at factories but in decentralised units.
(i) Huge demand : The world trade expanded at a very fast rate during the 17th and the 18th centuries. The acquisition of colonies was also responsible for the increase in demand. The town producers failed to produce the required quantity.
(ii) Powerful town producers :
• The town producers were very powerful,
• The producers could not expand the production a: will. This was because in the towns, urban crafts and trade guilds were powerful. These were associations of producers that trained craftspeople, maintained control over production, regulated competition and prices, and restricted the entry of new people within the trade.
(iii) Monopoly rights : The rulers granted different guilds the monopoly right to produce and trade in specific products It was therefore difficult for new merchants to set up business in towns. So they turned to the countryside.
(iv) New economic situation in the countryside : Open fields were disappearing in the countryside and the commons were being enclosed. Cottagers and poor peasants who were earlier depended on common lands became jobless So when merchants came around and offered advances to produce, peasants households eagerly agreed.

Nationalist Congress saw this movement as the seed of divide and rule which can makes the national movement weak. By this the British can rule over India as long they wish to rule. So, political leaders differed sharply over the question of separate electorates because of differences in opinion. While those supporting the cause of minorities and the dalits believed that only political empowerment would resolve their social backwardness, others like Gandhi ji thought that separate electorates would further slow down the process of their integration into society.

Advantages of globalisation to producers in India:
- Local companies, supplying raw materials to MNCs, have developed and prospered. Many Indian companies (Tata Motors and Ranbaxy) have themselves become multinational companies.
- Large MNCs provide advanced technology and managerial services to the enterprises established by them. Through these MNCs, technology has been transferred to developing countries. It has enabled them to produce quality goods and make them available in the international market. Thus, it paves the way to boost exports. Because of the flow of the MNC’s capital in foreign currency, the availability of foreign exchange increases, which, in turn, enables the country to make payments for imports.
Advantages of globalisation to consumers in India:
- Increased investments in Indian markets by the MNCs have led to the growth of the Indian economy. In many fields such as automobiles, smartphones, soft drinks, fast foods and garments, MNCs have created a vast choice of products for consumers. Consumers now enjoy improved quality and lower prices of many products in the market.
- Globalisation has opened many new opportunities for companies in the service sector, especially IT companies. These companies have offered their cheap but efficient consulting services to many nations. This has also created millions of jobs in India.

The factors which have enabled globalisation in India are
(i) During the past ,50 years, several improvements in technology have taken place. For example, in transportation technology, containers are now used for the transportation of goods. This has led to huge reduction in cost and increase in speed in reaching the markets.
(ii)Telecommunication facilities are used to contact one another around the world and to communicate from remote areas. Internet enables us to send instant electronic mail and talk across the world at negligible costs.
(iii) The Government of India has removed barriers or restrictions to trade set earlier. This step, called liberalisation Hon, ha enabled goods and services to be exported and imported easily.
Multinationals lave been allowed to set-up factories and offices in India. Due to this, there is greater integration of production and markets across countries.

When the cotton mill was introduced, all processes related to the production of cotton were carried out in the same place. All the related processes were also streamlined.
Supervision became easy because there was no need to move from one place to another to check what was happening in each process, especially production. It also became easy to administer the quality of cotton produced and ensure proper labour regulation.
All these could not be easily done when there was no cotton mill because cotton had to be produced in the countryside.
