The strange case of Britain:
- The transformation of Great Britain into a nation state was not a sudden process. There was no one British nation before the eighteenth century.
- People residing in the British Isles were mainly English, Welsh, Scots and Irish. These ethnic groups had distinct political and social traditions.
- As the English nation grew in wealth and power, it began to dominate the other islands.
- In 1688, the English Parliament seized power from the monarchy. The Parliament passed the Act of Union, 1707, by which England and Scotland were unified resulting in the formation of the ‘United Kingdom of Great Britain’.
- The Parliament was dominated by the English, and the political and cultural identities of the Scots were systematically suppressed. The Catholics in Scotland were brutally suppressed whenever they wanted to regain their independence.
- Ireland was inhabited by the Protestants and the Catholics. The English supported the Protestants and established their rule with their help and support. Catholics, who constituted a majority in Ireland, revolted against the British on numerous occasions but were suppressed.
- Ireland forcibly became a part of Britain in 1801. The English language dominated, and both Scotland and Ireland were subordinate to England.
This is a strange case because the formation of nation states in Great Britain was not a result of a sudden upheaval or revolution. It was rather a result of long-drawn-out process.

Post-independence India put barriers on its foreign trade as the imports had exceeded exports and the country was in a huge debt. To reverse the debt and improve the country’s financial condition the government decided to minimize its imports and foreign investment and maximize exports.
In the recent past the government decided to remove these barriers so that the local producers improve their quality of products and match the international standards.

It is true that the impact of globalisation has not been uniform.
This can he explained through the following points
(i) Globalisation has some negative impacts on employment and real wages. Due to ushering in of new technologies, output increases, but employment opportunities are not much, especially in rural areas, where over 60% of the population lives.
(ii) Globalisation is mainly beneficial to‘large capitalists, industries and large companies. Consequently, it increases the concentration of economic power and leads to inequalities.
(iii) In India, during 1990-9.1 more than 33% of national product originated in the agricultural sector, but this share has come down to 23% in 2004-05.

Henry Ford drew inspiration for the assembly line method from a Chicago slaughter house. He implemented it in his new car plant in Detroit. This involved the worker doing a process continuously and repeatedly, like fixing a part to the car. The speed of the work done was decided by the conveyor belt. So the workers couldn't' take a break or even have a friendly conversation with a fellow workmate.

In the modern era, industrialisation generally means the growth of factories and factory production. However, if we look at the case of England, there was a large scale industrial production for international markets at the time when factories were not yet established. The merchants brought the raw material for cloth and took them to artisans and peasants in the countryside. The yarn was spun, woven, pleated and dyed. The merchant then collected the cloth and sold it in international markets. Thus, we cannot say that ndustrialisation mean only the growth of factory industries. Many historians now refer to this phase of industrialisation as proto-industrialisation.
